Fred Frith at his best,
By A Customer
This review is from: Speechless (Audio CD)
FF has made a lot of interesting music. But the quality varies a lot. Sometimes the experiments becomes more noise than music. At other times he is too traditional. The individual tracks are all very good on this record. (The bonus tracks are not quite to this standard - I usually skip them). And they fit very well together. Along with "Gravity", The Art Bear, and the Skelleton Crew albums, this is one of his finest. On my personal top 10.

Here is the classical Ralph album from '81 finally remastered and put out in its original form. If you're uninitiated into Fred's solo works, this might be the place to start. This set has all of Fred's grandeous charachteristics, such as his tensions of table guitars as well as some heavy riffs and deep bass lines. Daring avant experiments flows together with some steady rhytmics. The range of ideas is very wide yet still has a good uniformity. Here Fred is assisted by the fabolous french RIO group Etron Fou Leloublan as well as funk-killing Massacre. Absolutely outstanding!
