Book Description

For fans of Stephen King, Joe Hill, and James Herbert. A paranormal conference at the most haunted hotel in the Blue Ridge Mountains goes haywire when ghost hunters accidentally stir up demons.

SPEED DATING WITH THE DEAD

When Digger Wilson brings his paranormal team Spirit Seekers International to the White Horse Inn, he is skeptical that his dead wife will keep her half of the bargain. He doesn’t believe in ghosts, and just before she died, she promised to meet him there.

But when one of the conference guests channels a mysterious presence and an Ouija board spells out a pet phrase known only to Digger and his wife, his convictions are challenged.

And when guests start to disappear, Digger and his daughter Kendra must face the circle of demons that view the hotel as their personal playground. Because soon the inn will be closing for good, angels can’t be trusted, and demons don’t like to play alone . . .

This is the second Scott Nicholson novel I've read. If you ask me, Scott's got a great way with words. His voice is hilarious and perpetually creative. What's nice about this is that no matter what story he's telling, I can enjoy it for the writing itself.

This one is kind of a ghost/horror story, but because the cast of characters was so wonderfully quirky, I found it to be at least as humorous as it was scary--and I think that's a good thing. It was fast-paced and fun, and the suspense kept me glued to the pages. I found it to be a great read and I recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a fun ghost story! August 25, 2010

I just finished "Speed Dating for the Dead" and had a great time. The story centers on a paranormal conference in an old hotel in the Appalachians.

There were lots of great, unique characters, and every angle of ghost hunting was explored--the techies with all their ghost-hunting equipment; the physicist determined to show that the conference is a hoax; the questionable psychics who provide entertainment.

There's also the showmanship of Digger Wilson, who organizes such conferences in haunted hotels (and sometimes "haunted" hotels) around the country. His teenage daughter is just sick of being dragged from one creepy hotel to another.

Best of all: the conference guests, all of them trying out-psychic, out-"I-saw-a-ghost!" each other.

There were some good scary scenes, too, especially in the basement and attic.

In a weird way, this reminded me of the movie "Clue," in that Clue was like a classic locked-room mystery, but of course the filmmakers knew all the established cliches and tropes and would twist and have fun with them. Speed Dating with the Dead is like that--on one level a classic ghost story, on another level a fresh and unique variation on what you expect from such a story.

I really enjoyed it and would recommend it!
