Acid rock soul, January 12, 2012
This review is from: Speed Queen of Ventura: An Introduction to Vinegar Joe (Audio CD)
These guys are very rock bluesy, some kind of progressive/soul rock hybrid. The Doors had elements of that as did Canned Heat or even Jefferson Airplane. The music has got guitar, harmonica, tight drum work, ballsy female (and sometimes male) vocalist. Occasional horns. The music is tight but it breathes. Vinegar Joe has been a recent discovery for me. It fits in that category of obscure but talented early 70s hippy rockers. All the tracks are good on this album with standouts for me being the title-track "Speedqueen of Ventura", "Never Met a Dog (that took to me)", "Buddy Can You Spare Me A Line". A nice cover of Hendrix's "Angel". "Black Smoke" is hot. All the songs are good and groovy, the work of good musicianship and a very hip attitude. Recommended if you can find it.
