5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for speed reading
Among all the speed reading books, I think this book is one of the best. It's definitely works for me because it's simple and concise. All you need to do is follow the steps that the book said and practice as often as you can. I was a 212 word per minute reader with 60% comprehension skill, after I followed the 3-2-1 practice as stated in the book, I've litereally...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great for starters
I have only just begun my quest for practical speed reading techniques, but already I have seen dramatic improvements (at least doubled my previous reading speed).

This book makes it easy for a motivated individual to get started at reading faster.

I gained the most out of the 3rd and 4th chapter and got very little out of the others.

In the 3rd chapter he...

I was a 212 word per minute reader with 60% comprehension skill, after I followed the 3-2-1 practice as stated in the book, I've litereally increasing my speed reading to 1200 wpm with 56% comprehension skill. My husband read this book a year earlier, and now his speed reading is 3000wpm with 80% comprehension skill. So I am stilling working on it. It's a great book though. You shouldn't miss this one if you want to improve your speed reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get More from EVERY book you read! Read more, remember more!, May 14, 1996
By A Customer
This is an insightful and practical book about reading books. Though several books on the market employ skimming or sighting topic sentences, Steve Moidel stays on target by teaching a method which includes reading every word of the text. From your first reading, you can measure vast improvements in both reading speed and comprehension. The learning process includes a study on how the eye operates, reading mechanics, and retaining comprehension. The price of this book is deceptively small, but it promotes a full, faster, and stronger comprehension of your entire library

4.0 out of 5 stars It's hard work...but probably worth it, March 10, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Speed Reading for Business (Barron's Business Success) (Paperback)
Yes, you will increase your reading speed/skills with this book, but be prepared for some hard work. The author asks that you do the exercises for 6 weeks, about an hour a day. This can be very tiring since you're doing the same set of exercises over and over and over....Unfortunately, there's no variety in the exercises. After about 4.5 weeks, I was really feeling the monotony, but stuck it out for 6 weeks.

I increased my reading speed from 300wpm to about 800wpm. That's 800 when I REALLY want to understand what I'm reading. Don't be deceived by the reading rate you get from the exercises. I got up to 1100wpm doing the exercises, but you'll quickly realize that this is not attainable when you want to read for good understanding and comprehension. For example, I was reading at 1100 doing the exercises. Then when I read Chapter 12(the reading comprehension test), I read at 800wpm. And this chapter is relatively easy to read, not like the reading I do for work-related items. I assume I'll go below 800 for my work-related reading.

This book needs updating: 1)the first line of chapter 14 says "The Internet is here to stay!" (duh); 2)chapter 8 has the exercises you do for 6 weeks. The author doesn't say if you should continue reading the book once you've read this chapter, or stop and do the exercises for 6 weeks, and then finish reading the book. But in the last paragraph of the book, he states that "the next six weeks are the most crucial." So I guess he wants you to read the entire book first?;
3)get rid of chapter 11: "Develop a Super Memory". I bought this book for speed reading, not for developing my memory.

Overall, I am happy with the results and recommend the book. You'll become a better reader, but not an expert speed reader. You'll need to go elsewhere to attain more expertise. However, for [a good price] and 6 weeks of your time, you'll probably be happy with the results too. Good luck if you decide to buy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars My first and last speed reading book., February 2, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Speed Reading for Business (Barron's Business Success) (Paperback)
This book is great even for people that do not want to speed read and just want to improve on their reading a little. It describes everything that slows down reading and how to get past it. I was very surprised at the size of this book and thought I might have wasted my money. After reading just the first 4 chapters I realized I would have paid 10 times as much for it. In short, the main reason speed readers are very fast readers is because they practice speed reading and understand how to get past the things that make reading slow. With that, this book explains all of this and makes it simple to understand.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Absolute Best Help for Speed Reading and Comprehension!!, January 13, 2002
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Speed Reading for Business (Barron's Business Success) (Paperback)
I have purchased more than one speed reading book. The others were large and cumbersome, and as a busy professional the idea of wading through each of them was NOT appealing! This book, however, is small, very readable, and filled with helpful tips.

After a brief introductory chapter, the author addresses the attitudes and goals conducive to speed reading. He then covers six major reading problems. The approach is to identify clearly the need for speed reading, then to offer instruction.

All of the techniques presented here are very practical, and could be used for office, school or home. The text also has red headers that make it much easier to follow the author's line of thought. I would suggest a second and even a third reading of the book to make sure the bulk of the material has been understood.

I recommend this book highly to anyone wanting to improve his/her rate of reading and level of comprehension. Both topics are addressed very well in this work.

Now that I've read this book, I have no desire to read the other speed-reading volumes I purchased. Instead, I'm ready to hone my new skills with the reading that I MUST get done!

4.0 out of 5 stars Practical, sound advice, March 13, 2002

This review is from: Speed Reading for Business (Barron's Business Success) (Paperback)
I'll start off by saying that if you want to become a proficient speed reader, it takes work and effort. Having said this, Moidel's book is the way to go about it. The book outlines the most common hindrances to speed reading and then illustrates how to conquer them. Within an hour I doubled my reading speed by using some of the basic pointers.

To get full use of this book, you must dedicate time to practising the numerous drills that are offered. With perseverence, you should be pushing 1000 words per minute with excellent comprehension. This book is fairly small and offers lots of no nonsense advice to get you on your way to speed reading.

This is the first speed-reading book that really seemed to work for me. It was quick to read and I noticed a drastic improvement in my reading speed and comprehension. Main points are very nicely laid out for future review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear understanding about dimensions of reading, and works!, March 5, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Speed Reading for Business (Barron's Business Success) (Paperback)
After reviewing several books about speed reading --some of them very expensive--, I found it. And I strongly recommend it. The book allows you to understand and to train separately three different dimensions of reading:

- Speed, understanding and recalling.

Contrasting with another "speed reading in 5 minutes" offers, this book does not sell you miracles: you need to practice and practice to speed up your reading skills.

as a minus, I personally found the chapter about Internet useless. Do we need to read a complete chapter to learn that "Much of Internet reading is prereading or scanning"?
I don't think so.

If I would recommend a book to start with speed reading, this will be the first one.

I'm still in the practice stage, but this book has helped me triple my reading speed in a short time. The nice thing is it is a short book and you can get going quickly. A must read for people living in this new "information overload" society.

4.0 out of 5 stars Practice makes perfect., March 17, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Speed Reading for Business (Barron's Business Success) (Paperback)
Some of the items explained in the book might seem corny, and you might not want to do them. The thing is that if you carry out the instructions of the book you will develop the ability of improving your reading speed. It's all about practice, without it you will not improve your reading skills or speed.
