The greatest resource a speedskater could ask for,
By A Customer
This review is from: Speed on Skates: A Complete Technique, Training and Racing Guide for In-Line and Ice Skaters (Paperback)
For years, speedskaters have lived on 15 year old books and magazine articles for technique and training tips. Now, there is one great resource for skate knowledge. Without going too deep for non-kinesiologists, Publow explains how and why everything speedskaters do works. He manages to show in photographs the basic components that we all need to learn and perfect to be great skaters. The drills for improving technique range from simple to genius. The book will warrant many, many re-reads to learn and understand more each time.

A great manual,

Most inline skating books are targeted at the recreational skater only and have information that speedskaters pretty much already know, but finally a good up to date manual for the aspiring speedskater has been written. Detailed and with many photos it is a valuable resource for inline speed enthusiasts. The price is low considering its sheer size and number of pages full of useful information within. Short track and long track ice skating is also covered for those who enjoy both skeelers and ice. There are no 400 metre ice rinks in Oklahoma but I can still dream...

Comprehensive & Dependable,

Best book on inline speedskating yet. Can always rely on the sample training programs for intermediate or advanced skaters. Though good, there's still areas to improve on: 1) Not all weight-training exercises are explained or has a picture, 2) Relationship between section on the 3-day resistance program and the "2-days resisitance training microcycle" in the sample training program - not very clear 3) More sample training programs needed for beginners, lack-of-time skaters, intermediate and a more detailed 5-stage program (+sample programs) for advanced skaters who trains year-round, 4) Ice-skating section has got to be improved (no standard !), 5) Use pictures of the best professionals in the world, not just Barry Publow, 6) Dimensions & construction requirements of 200m banked tracks. All said, this is still THE BEST inline speedskating book in the market. So to all inline speedskaters - YOU MUST BUY IT !

Inline Speed Skating,
By
This review is from: Speed on Skates: A Complete Technique, Training and Racing Guide for In-Line and Ice Skaters (Paperback)
From the background I had during my competitive years in the sport of inline speedskating, I believe the book is a complete and technical guide to the basic terminology, strategy, and mechanics that are involved with speedskating; both on ice and inline skates. There is heavy usage on photographs to show you the correct way to skate to reach your potential but to achieve what is seen in the picture typically takes years of training with coaches to show you the ways to train your body to achieve the form and stride of an effecient inline skater.
I also believe that some of the material is dated regarding the current face of the sport but the book is a staple in the sport and is a worthy look for outsiders and internally at the facets of the sport of inline and ice speedskating. For anyone interested in speedskating either on ice skates or inline skates, this book is the most comprehensive guide from a champion speedskater that covers most facets of the sport.

A must have. Loaded with information and great pictures. Also very technical training schedules for the serious skaters. Not too much for short trackers but still alot of useful skating information.

Helped me speed up on my own,

This review is from: Speed on Skates: A Complete Technique, Training and Racing Guide for In-Line and Ice Skaters (Paperback)
This book is like a personal trainer for inline (roller skating). I started reading this book in July 2006 and by August 2006 I was so much faster in inline skating. This is from someone who has never taken any lessons and started to skate on his own. I did the Northshore Inline (Duluth) half marathon later in Sept 2006 in 1 hour 6 mts (pretty impressive by my own standards). I keep referrring to it once in a while to keep up my training and speed.

Good reference book. A little dated in terms of skate technology but great for workout and conditioning information. Has useful drills with training aids.

Best tool ever for inline and ice speed skaters,
This review is from: Speed on Skates: A Complete Technique, Training and Racing Guide for In-Line and Ice Skaters (Paperback)
This book is thorugh and even those of us that are completely uneducated about athletics and how to improve in them can understand clearly what is written in this book. I was afraid it would be too technical but it caters to all levels of knowledge. I am very impressed. I plan to start impleting these practices very soon.
