5.0 out of 5 stars You need the single, even if you bought the album!
If you're a Coldplay fan, you were probably as excited as I was to hear the first outstanding single from X&Y. "Speed Of Sound" is as good as Coldplay gets, sounding like an updated version of "Clocks."

3.0 out of 5 stars It may not play
I bought the CD, but unfortunately it will not play on my house player - due to the copy protection format being used. BE AWARE - you may not be able to play this cd. IF you play it on your PC, disable autorun first or it will attempt to install copy protection software on your pc.

If you're a Coldplay fan, you were probably as excited as I was to hear the first outstanding single from X&Y. "Speed Of Sound" is as good as Coldplay gets, sounding like an updated version of "Clocks."

What makes this release essential, though, are the b-sides. Sure, you may have already picked up the album, but you'll need "Things I Don't Understand" and "Proof." Both songs, without question, could have made the track list for X&Y.

"Things I Don't Understand" is an uptempo jam, very reminiscent of New Order's "Regret." In fact, it's probably one of their strongest b-sides to date, along with "One I Love" from the "In My Place" single. According to Coldplay.com, the track was scheduled to be on X&Y, but it was pulled at the last minute.

"Proof" is another ballad, and although it's not the best song they've ever recorded, it would probably be album material for most other bands.

If you're new to collecting Coldplay singles, this is one of the best to start with. "Things I Don't Understand" alone makes it a worthy purchase. I would also recommend checking out the singles from A Rush Of Blood To The Head, which all have excellent b-sides.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice, July 11, 2005

Winter Gold "Wendy" (Central California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Speed of Sound 1 (Audio CD)
This is the Single for "Speed of Sound." I purchased it primarily for the other two songs, "Things that I Don't Understand" and "Proof." Both of these songs make this CD more than worth the price of admission. Of course, "Speed of Sound" is a "get you moving" kind of tune.
If you are a fan of Coldplay, I cannot imagine your not enjoying this CD.
One more thing, depending which country this CD is sourced from, it may not be playable on your computer's regular software and therefore not transferrable onto your MP3 (iPod). It is playable on your computer as long as you load the supplied software. This will allow the listener to play the CD on the computer, but not download it to your hard drive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Download it instead, August 19, 2005
This review is from: Speed of Sound 1 (Audio CD)
Things I Don't Understand and Proof are great songs, but as people have mentioned before, it's copy-protected, so you can't burn it to your own mix. However, you can download it instead. That way, you can burn it like anything else. It's hard to find a site that has a complete enough collection to have more than just LPs. [...]

2.0 out of 5 stars Really Torked it's Copy Protected, August 13, 2005
This review is from: Speed of Sound 1 (Audio CD)
There are zillions of people out there like me who don't upload songs on peer sites for stealing. But we do like to Rip them for addition to a mix disc ... in my case, for the car. So instead of listening to the new B sides on this disc a thousand times, I will listen to them zero and be ticked at Coldplay forever.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Melodic Speed Of Song, June 10, 2005
This review is from: Speed of Sound 1 (Audio CD)
There is no doubt about the melodic contemporary feelings that Coldplay have showcased in their music for the past several years. After the worldwide massave message A Rush Of The Blood To The Head has brought from the band, they really have done it again with another very soulful track. Chris Martin & company's latest Speed Of Sound, the lead-off single from the bands third release X&Y is a remarkable uplifting feeling of a song. It is just great to listen to and is just a pure delight. The feeling is similarly showcased as a mix from other great singles like Clocks, and Trouble, but it is just captured so well from the alternative feelings. It is just one of the best tracks released so far this year.

Song: B+

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Notch Coldplay, August 9, 2005
This review is from: Speed of Sound 1 (Audio CD)
Quality music. If you like Coldplay this CD is a must have for your collection. They have their own uniqueness and they remain wonderfully consistant. Overall this collection of songs seems to be bit more up in tempo and up in spirit. And as always Coldpay's tunes have a way of growing on you like no other in this day and age.

this is strange; Things i don't understand, a b-side to Speed of Sound... i think it should at least have made the album cut...this song blows away a lot of the songs on the album...
