Editorial Reviews

2010 release, the first album of new material from the veteran Punks in 12 years. Recorded earlier this year in Southern California and supported by two new music videos, this record is sure to please even their most discriminating fans. With in-your-face vocals, and fast skate anthems that clock in at around two minutes each, it's like a leap though time that will take the listener back to the Punk Rock days of the early '80s. Even the Punk Rock press approves!

I guess it was wrong for me to expect this record to contain any similarities in sound to what first attracted me to JFA in the mid-80's. I understand it's wrong to expect bands to sound the same forever. I just really wished they touched on the genius that they displayed with records like the "My Movie" 7" (1986)and even their earlier stuff. They always sounded unique to me. After listening to this for six months it started to grow on me so I'm editing my original review. But even after six months I am still disappointed that all of the quirks that made the band's material from their first five years stand out is gone. There's no odd reverb on the guitar and the subtle surf influences are gone. I wish they would have kept just a little of these things going. If you've only heard "Valley of the Yakes" and "Blatant Localism" this will be a total shock to you musically. I'm staying a fan of JFA and hoping their next record will have a little bit of what made me originally love the band.
