Biography

Ten years in, the four gentlemen of Chatham County Line have a lot to reflect on: sold out shows in the US and abroad, appearances on national radio & TV, four solid selling records, and four really dirty suits.

"We want to be the band that puts on the most professional show in the business of what we do," says singer/guitarist/songwriter Dave Wilson. "If you've ... Read more in Amazon's Chatham County Line Store

Editorial Reviews

Following the release of 2005's Route 23,Speed Of The Whippoorwill, which was originally released in May of 2006, was produced by Brian Paulson (Beck, Wilco, Uncle Tupelo) and continued the band's quest to unite their love for the power of rock with their faith in their home state's fine heritage of pure, engaging, traditional music. Speed Of The Whippoorwill features tracks that have now become Chatham County Line classics and have been staples of their live show for years, including: ''By The Riverside'', ''Company Blues'', ''Confederate Soldier'', ''Rock Pile'' and of course, ''Speed Of The Whippoorwill''.

Anyone who listens to Doc Watson will immediately recognize his influence on CCL. Listen a bit closer and you'll hear John Hartford's ghost. But just as John Hartford forged new paths through the staid bluegrass landscape in his time, CCL takes their influences and creates a beautiful new bluegrass tradition. Their instruments blend seamlessly and then rise and fall in swooping solos. But, best of all, the four band members cluster round a single microphone and rely upon their own natural abilities (and not a mixing board) to create their soaring and yet perfectly harmonized vocals. Get their first two albums and you'll understand what I'm writing about. This band just keeps getting better.

The first time I heard CD I thought it was ok. Second time it was good and then songs started playing in my mind and then I was hooked. This is by far their best effort. Make sure to read the lyrics to really appreciate this CD.

What can one say more than this is another gem from this great band start to finish.

As I've said before, their live show cannot be missed, jaw dropping instrumental work. I really hope they get the attention they deserve with this effort.

Just dead-on near prefect meld of old style grass with a touch of the newgrass. Vocals are a delight, and the songs are top notch. If you don't like this record, you don't like bluegrass.

I first heard Chatham County Line at a bluegrass festival. I liked their music immediately, which I find doesn't always happen with bands at festivals. They may not be purely bluegrass, as there are elements of country and even folk music in some of their tunes, but it works for me.

I read in another review that they were influenced by John Hartford and others, but no one mentioned the artist that lead singer Dave Wilson reminds me of - Bob Dylan. Partly the tenor of his voice and partly his songwriting skills. He writes most of their songs, and on another album the only song they cover is a Dylan tune.Hmm.

I will admit that this is not my favorite Chatham County Line album. Then again, there is not a single song on this album that tempts me to skip over it - I like them all, so that says a lot. There are a few spirited songs featuring excellent banjo, mandolin and fiddle work, and a couple of simple songs that almost seem like ukelele tunes to me. And of course some of the fine storytelling you get with Dave Wilson, such as "They were Just Children," Confederate Soldier,' or the title tune for that matter.

If this were to be your only Chatham County Line album, I wouldn't recommend it, but it is very good and will make you want more.
