Editorial Reviews

Smile for the camera… or perish in the glare of its lens.

It’s been over a decade since the Bubble War, when the global economy burst. The rich got richer, and the poor were out of luck. Welcome to Tokyo, the city where all the winners came to jerk each other off. If you’ve got money, you can buy anything your sick mind can dream up. If you don’t, you just try not to get crushed beneath the wheels. Only the wicked rule here.

Enter the Club, a secret society pandering to the ultra-rich and fulfilling their deepest desires… legal or otherwise. Sent to infiltrate the underground elite, Saiga, once a renowned war photographer now reduced to tabloid journalism, stumbles upon a depraved ceremony and discovers the ultimate beauty in Tokyo’s darkest catacombs. With a tragic young girl named Kagura in tow, Saiga flees from his enemies and his own inner demons. A single kiss has ignited a chain of events that could force the entire ruling class to their knees.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great show, Author dead., July 7, 2010

I caught this series while it was on adult swim. Didn't miss an episode. I agree with the other reviewers. It is not to the level of Cowboy Beebop or several other classics. It is better than plenty of other shows. That said I was saddened to find the original author of the story died in 2004 and it seems the popularity of the show kinda died off after that because I too think this series had something going for it, but its largely left unfinished. His friend did step in and finish the remaining books according to wiki. I'm not sure how much more we'll see of this universe.

Eitherway I really liked the characters and their individual personalities and quirks. I thought it was interesting how they wove the church into a serious political force and how it was represented visually.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Great but Not Terrible, June 12, 2010

(REAL NAME)
Here's the thing, this anime had great potential. I mean I was just ecstatic to finally get to watch it all since I didn't get to see much of it when it was on adult swim. Who can forget moments like when the main character is ripping out the still beating heart of a vampire and crushing it with his bare hands, lots of cool moments like those occur. However, when I watched it completely it felt like I was watching Chrono Crusade, Trigun, and D N Angel in a very screwed up way. Those who have seen those animes will know what I mean. That isn't the real problem though, there were moments that get your blood boiling with excitement and then there are these moments that kinda make your head turn a bit, it might be since there was not enough plot development before things got out of hand. It was like the producers were running out of time and didn't use the space they had wisely. Those are the only flaws I can see, I'm sure the mangas or books do a much better job in these plot issues. Just keep in mind if you buy this alone, there will be questions you won't get answered. That's my honest opinion, you bigger anime fans might just want to pass this one up, it kind of leaves an empty feeling inside after seeing the whole thing. In general just be cautious and heed my words. Not a bad anime, just not one I would keep in the collection as far as epic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't miss this!, June 30, 2009
This anime is based off vampires and humans in a semi-peaceful existence, where the world has been ravaged by WMD's. However, war may break out at any moment. Abel is the main character. It is a spin-off of Cain and Abel from the Bible. Abel is...special, that's all I will say. He acts like the clutsy hero, who has a dark past, as well as a dark side. This show has many philosophical moments, as well as many bloody moments, but it does stay away from a lot of gore. This story is full of drama and romance, as well as action and adventure. Each character has their own attitudes and style of behavior, which is great. Overall a good anime, comparable to Trigun, but not quite enough to reach Cowboy Bebop.
