5.0 out of 5 stars Read below for Sizes!
I have 2 boys, ages 3 and 5, both of which are in the beginner swimming stages. Our local Y did not allow swimmies or arm floats and recommended the swim vest instead. I was afraid that my 5, almost 6 year old would feel uncomfortable in the vest since most kids his age do not need such a device. 3.0 out of 5 stars fit well, but not Coast Guard approved
Who knew Speedo would make some that is not approved by the USCG? We bought it to help my daughter learn to swim better and were informed by the lifeguard on duty that she could not wear it in the swim area. Although, quite stylish, not sure where else she would wear it.

However, speedo has such a wonderful variety of style and "big boy" designs, that my son never became upset when he put it on or when he played with his peers. It has given him the confidence in the water to concentrate on swimming and safety techniques while giving me a greater sense of security with both my kids saftey. This vest is only for helping beginner swimmers, and not for boats or used as perservers. It is not a full lifejacket but rather a very lightweight "shirt" vest that zippers in the front like a jacket and buckles under the legs. We have had no issues with rashes when they wear a shirt underneath. The fabric is soft and seems very duable, other than snags here and there, the vests have held up well especially with two very active boys.

As for Sizes - The Medium size is for ages 2-4 or 33-45 lbs and 22 in in chest. The large is for 4-6 year olds, with weight 45-60 lbs and 24 inches in chest. I enclosed a picture of the chart.

Hope that Helps!

The large fit my 5-year-old really well. She's 44 inches tall and weighs 44 pounds. She wore it the whole weekend at the water park and it was great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kids swim vest: awesome, June 9, 2010

My kids love the vests. The fit well. Easy/quick to put on and easily adjustable once they are wearing them. The vest give them added confidence in the water and allow them to practice their swimming safely and more independently. Well worth the money.

Better than floats on the arms. Allows child to swim on the front, back and side since it's rather neutral. Easy to put on.

Medium is for age 2-4, 22" chest, and 33-45lbs
Large is for age 4-6, 24" chest, and 45-60lbs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good quality, works but could be slightly better., September 6, 2010

The vest looks and works great, we used it all summer. My only quip so far is that it isn't quite buoyant enough for beginning swimmers. I know it's not designed as a life saving device but be prepared for you child to inhale water easily if they're young and just learning to swim. The smallest of waves will breach their mouth if it fits similar to my child. It can't be weight either because it is used on a medium/tall three year old with slim build that weighed ~28 pounds.

All in all though, it's a relatively minor complaint because it seems to be much more versatile for swimming than most vests and those bicep hugging inflatables fix the existing issue until new swimmers learn to watch the water a little and hold their breath when needed.

The plus side, it fits well, allows good mobility, the quality seems good, it has held up well and we have mostly used it on sand mixed paint on concrete patio which can rip and tear materials easily. The kids can wear it for hours and we've had no issues with skin burns/irritations on a child with very sensitive skin.

After one summer, we have a 3 year old that can tread water for a short time without the vest, can swim underwater well without the vest and breezes around the pool with the vest. I think it was a big help with confidence and learning the mechanics of basic swimming.

5.0 out of 5 stars rubs under the arms, July 20, 2010

This vest is like ALL vests of this type that I have seen. It rubs under the arms and causes wedgies when your kiddo is actually swimming and jumping. Great float - lets my 42 lb daughter go under when she jumps, but brings her right back up. It is cute, so my daughter loves it, and the vest itself is soft to the touch. No problem with the vest beyond the rubbing under the arms. The wedgie just goes with the territory of keeping the vest from "turtling" around their neck.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great swimming aid, August 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This item was purchased for our 2 year old grand-daughter. As advertised, it is a swim vest to assist with learning to swim, and not a PFD. It provides a little extra buoyancy, which is helpful for learning to swim, but does not provide enough buoyancy to keep the child's head above the water surface. Therefore, it is essential to be with the child at all times when he/she is wearing this vest. It is obviously quite comfortable to wear - our grand-daughter tries to put it on before going near the water, and is happy to wear it for the duration of her swimming activities. We've been pleased with this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for belly surfing, July 9, 2011

This is the best swim vest for my 3 year old because he belly surfs with dad and there are no buckles to get in the way on the front. I have one for my 2 year old as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST JACKET!, January 24, 2011
This review is from: Speedo Kid's UV Neoprene Swim Vest (Sports)
I have two boys ages 8 & 5, both are around 40 lbs and this jacket works perfectly for both. The colors are bright & does not fade easliy. We have had 2 jackets for 2 years, and they have been to the beach, the pool, & water parks. We also have a pool at home and through the summer they are in the pool everyday & they have lasted 2 seasons! This jacket does not have the bulky type float pads in them like the full body suits or life jackets. ADULT SUPERVISION is still needed because these jackets are more for confidence building, but they will bring them back up to the surface, but they have to paddle & kick to remain afloat like real swimming. My oldest is at the point now where he no longer needs a jacket, he's diving in on his own & is swimming like a fish. My five year old feels safer in his jacket & does not need floats or any other device. The zipper is smooth action & the crotch support line clips easily, and adjusts easily. I have never had an issue with this jacket. The built in sun protection works great, they have never had a sunburn where the jacket covers, but of course sunscreen will be needed on the tops of the shoulders, and back of neck where the jacket does not fully cover. I always rinsed the jacket in cool water after pool play or being in the ocean & drip dried in our bathroom. I would think that leaving it in the sun to dry would bleach them out just like anything else.
If your little one is scared of water, yet doesn't like the bulky float jackets & water wings this is perfect! It makes them feel grown because the jacket is light & looks like something a surfer would wear, not cute or childish. I have not had issues with rubbing, or riding up even after hours in water.
