SWR-The Best Way to Teach Reading and Spelling,
This review is from: Spell to Write And Read / Core Kit - Teacher's Edition (Paperback)
The SWR Core Kit listed here includes: Spell to Write and Read which is the overall teachers manual to the, WISE Guide for Spelling, Phonogram Cards and Spelling Rule Cards, Phonogram CD. If purchased separately, the five items in the SWR Core Kit would be $100. You save by buying them together and only pay $98 for the SWR Core Kit.
The set of books in the SWR Core Kit can teach up to college level spelling for all the children in your family or school. The only thing you need to purchase each year is a Learning Log (spelling note book) where the kids write their words. I use Spell to Write and Read with all my children. I have home schooled my seven children for 9 years now and Spell to Write and Read (SWR) by Wanda Sanseri is the best and most significant program I have ever used to teach my children to spell, read, and write. I would never go back to my old ways of teaching. In our first year with SWR all four of my boys made great strides in reading and spelling. My 6 and 7 years old boys jumped up by two grade levels in spelling. Their improvement in reading was dramatic. After only one year with SWR my 6 and 7 year old sons were able to read 4th grade level books with ease. This year they are now 7 and 8 years old and able to read a 180 page chapter book, such as the Childhood of Famous American series, in only 4 days! For a 180 chapter book I break the reading sessions down to: 23 pages in the morning and 22 pages in the afternoon. They are very normal sword fighting, tree climbing boy, and now with SWR also great readers! My oldest two boys, ages 11 and 14 jumped up by four and five grade levels in one year with SWR as measured by the spelling diagnostic test. Though my 11 and 14 year old sons were good readers by the time they started with SWR, they needed work in spelling. I found out the hard way that good readers are not always good spellers! In our second year with SWR and the older boys were 12 and 15. They tested at 11.7 grade level on the spelling diagnostic test by the end of the year. This is truly excellent and we are all pleased! It is our third year with SWR and the younger set of boys are now 8 and 9 years old. By local school enrollment law and practice they would be in 2nd and 3rd grade and they just tested at 6.0 and 6.4 grade level on the spelling diagnostic! You can bet I am mighty satisfied with SWR! Love this product. I as a teacher/homeschool mom am starting to understand the english language far better than I ever have before. This product is systematic in it's teaching of phongrams, spelling rules, and writing. For me as a teacher I can better teach how and why words are spelled and sound the way they do. I love learning the spelling rules with my children. The book is user friendly but it took me two times through to get all the steps I am supposed to use with the children. I didn't learn this way in school so it is a new way of learning for all of us. What a great way to lay out the english language to learn to read and spell! My daughter, who is dyslexic and my 5 year old son are both getting great results. It seems slow at first but soon enough they are reading whole books not just simple short vowel readers.

This kit is one of the best items you can buy for your child's learning. I have used this in teaching first grade and also with teaching my own children when they were in middle/high school. Whatever the age of the children you are teaching, this will help with both their reading and their spelling. It is an incredible learning tool.

Very happy with this program,
This review is from: Spell to Write And Read / Core Kit - Teacher's Edition (Paperback)
I used this last year with my First Grader, after deciding I didn't like the program we had used in Kindergarten. Now I am using SWR with her this year in Second Grade, as well as with my Son who is in Kindergarten. I do not pay much attention to diagnostics or what level my children are in, I just use whatever seems to help them make progress.
I like this program because it is very systematic. They learn a set of 27 rules and a set of 70 phonograms. These same rules and phonograms will be reviewed over and over, each year, for several years, and will be used to spell words from the simple to the very complex. I haven't run into other programs that laid out the groundwork in such a simple, systematic way. I also like the logbooks, which help the kids track their progress as the year goes on. Although I could go on about other positive aspects of this program, I will just add that I like the fact that the kids hear the words before they see them, and are made to think about how the words sound, and which phonograms fit the sounds. Then they write adn see the words. This ensures that they are actually decoding the words, and not just putting spelling into short term memory without really understanding why teh word is written in such a way. For example, my daughter wrote a spelling word correctly, and I asked her how she knew it was spelled that way. She replied, "Because I've seen it that way a million times in books." But because of the program, she was required (and able) to tell me why the word was spelled the way it was. I am sure that will help her retain the spelling longer. Highly recommended. I use it with 'Cursive First' to teach handwriting.

SWR is an excellent systematic language arts curriculum,
This review is from: Spell to Write And Read / Core Kit - Teacher's Edition (Paperback)
Spell to Write and Read written by Wanda Sanseri, along with the companion book The Wise Guide for Spelling, phonograms cards, spelling rules and CD, have helped my dyslexic son process the English language far better than 5 years of private school and specialists.
Spell to Write and Read uses four pathways to the mind to help a student internalize a word. I know of no other curriculum that utilizes this method. All students will hear, speak, write and read each spelling word simultaneously during guided spelling dictation. It is this simultaneous multisensory process that has helped my son compensate for his dyslexia, because with all the senses working at the same time, he can actually learn and *retain* a new word. Spell to Write and Read uses a systematic approach by which a student regardless of age or ability is taught the sounds of speech, penmanship, spelling, logic, composition and grammar which in turn leads to spontaneous reading. Writing is one of the most important pathways to the mind and must be used with all students. When the student is writing, they are linking together all that is taught. Today my son is reading fluently, yet there was a time when he threw a book across the room in frustration. He writes in beautiful cursive and composes short paragraphs with his spelling words. One of his greatest loves is mechanics and he is reading all about the technical details of farming equipment and it is a joy to see. When I first started with my son he could read some from sight. He could not retain his spelling words. His penmanship was illegible. He had no composition skills. He had a speech delay and fine motor delay. The improvement my son has made because of Spell to Write and Read is nothing short of a miracle. I have the greatest respect for Mrs. Sanseri and her work, along with all the endorsed trainers across the country who dedicate their time promoting English language literacy.

We recently started SWR after a recommendation from a homeschooling friend. What I like is that it teaches things quickly and expects the child to remember---which she does. It's a little "frustrating" as a parent because I'm having to learn to spell and write like she is learning, but it will be great in the long run! We also just bought "Cursive First" to go along with SWR and are anxious to get started with it also.

I am using this curriculum with my 5 year old and love it. You can use it for grades K-12 without having to buy new books each year. You need one new workbook each year that is $6. I love that this curriculum teaches the 70 phonograms (different combinations of sounds) in the English language independently and teaches all of the rules. When learning a new word, you read the word out loud, use it in a sentence, have the child repeat the word, sound out the word, spell the word, and then read the word after he has spelled it. It also has lots of great ideas for games and ways to teach the phonograms and grammar to children. It is working really well for my Kindergartener, who is currently at a 1.9-2nd grade reading/writing/spelling level. On another note, I started my son out with the Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons book. We completed that book just before my son started Kindergarten. Switching to this Spell to Write and Read curriculum was a huge learning style/curve for me because the previous book had each lesson spelled out for the teacher--I just sat down and read it with my son. This curriculum is NOT that kind of curriculum. Most of it is suggestions and ideas that are not cut and dried as the child is first starting to figure out the sounds. I was really lost for the first two weeks of trying to figure out this curriculum. Now it is easy, though, since I mostly just have my son learn 5 new words per day from the spelling list and go over the rules for those words that day as well as the extra grammar ideas that the curriculum recommends for that section (words are broken into sections with 20 words per section). Now that I have the program figured out, I love it and have been recommending it to all of my homeschooling friends.
