About the Author

Robert William Service (1874–1958) was a poet and writer, sometimes referred to as "the Bard of the Yukon".[ He is best-known for his writings on the Canadian North, including the poems "The Shooting of Dan McGrew", "The Law of the Yukon", and "The Cremation of Sam McGee". His writing was so expressive that his readers took him for a hard-bitten old Klondike prospector, not the later-arriving bank clerk he actually was. In addition to his Yukon works, Service also wrote poetry set in locales as diverse as South Africa, Afghanistan, and New Zealand. His writing has a decidedly British Empire point of view.

This short book, originally published in 1907, contains some of Robert Service's best known poems, including Shooting of Dan McGrew, Cremation of Sam McGee and Call of the Wild.

The material in the book is first rate.

I'll agree with some of the other reviewers about the lack of links in the table of contents. But lighten up guys. It's a free download; you can't have it all for nothing.

Despite the lack of links in the table of contents, anyone interested in Robert Service should download this one. It contains some of his best known poems.

5.0 out of 5 stars a glimpse into a never again world October 26, 2009

I really enjoy Robert service's writing, in fact one of his poems was the first public performance that I gave. To read his poems is to go go back in time when things were a bit less aminated than they are now. I enjoy how he can set the stage without describing every detail. When you read his poetry you can see wha the is writing about. I would recommend this book for anyone who likes the outdoors as well as the experienced writer or someone that is both.

4.0 out of 5 stars "I Have Clinched and Closed With the Naked North..." April 25, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you want to add some Robert Service to your Kindle library, if you just want to refresh your recollection of a favorite poem or two, or if you just want a brief survey of Service's work or a brief reading entertainment, this free Kindle book is a fine choice.

Some Kindle freebies of poetry collections are formatted so badly that the poems are virtually unreadable, (for example, T. S. Elliot's "Wasteland"). That's not a problem here. Service's work is so rhythmic and muscular it could probably survive weird formatting, but that's not an issue since the formatting, while less than ideal, leaves the poems comprehensible.

There are two Tables of Contents. The first one is just poem titles and it is active. The second Table of Contents follows a brief prefatory poem, and lists titles and first lines. That Table is not active and is helpful only if you remember a first line but not a title, ( say for "The Men That Don't Fit In" or "The Heart of the Sourdough" or some other lesser known poems).

Most of Service's most well known poems are in this collection, which is unusual for a Kindle freebie, so this is a particularly good value and rewarding find. At a minimum it's good for a download and a skim.

Service's poetry is something to read again and again. The story telling and rhythmic patterns put a smile on my face. Even with some of the darker story telling. Read more

If you nothing more than the Cremation of Sam McGee you will learn to love this volume. R. Service was a man though and through, he just lived life.

Service has always been one of my favorites. Now that poetry has become so elitist and muddled, I enjoy him even more.
