Book Description

August 27, 1996
In his long and successful career as an agent to many of the most famous and dynamic motivational speakers in the world, Bart Manning had no peer. But when a series of misfortunes silenced the voices of his star clients, he happily retired. He'd had his last innings, and with his lovely wife, Mary, was enjoying his newfound freedom.
So why, one morning, did he find himself headed back to the little office that he had never given up? He didn't know. But as he sat at his dusty desk, he decided to go back into business. If God had sent him there, Bart told himself, he would wait for His plan to unfold.
Then, at a crowded convention, he found his answer, in the person of a handsome young man named Patrick Donne, whose deep, commanding voice spoke words of profound wisdom that electrified the audience. With the thrill of discovery, Bart recognized Donne's short speech as the best inspirational talk he had ever heard. Bart was soon caught up in the extraordinary realm that was Patrick's ordinary world, where even tragedy and sorrow became transforming experiences and remarkable things happened. . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In this simplistic yet well-packaged contemporary parable, Mandino (The Twelfth Angel) returns with further inspirational advice for better living. When a wheelchair-bound preacher in Central Park shouts "Do it now! You! You! Do it now!" to retired booking agent Bart Manning during his morning jog, Manning finds himself inexplicably compelled to run toward his long-abandoned office near Times Square. There, Manning, once an exclusive agent for many of the world's top motivational speakers, decides to come out of retirement. In search of new talent to represent, he and his wife, Mary, attend a speaker's convention in Washington, D.C., where they are enraptured by 32-year-old Patrick Donne and his speech outlining steps to living a happier and more productive life. Soon after he begins to represent this "spellbinder," Manning realizes that this man from Blessings, Mont., may be more than just an exceptional speaker. Although Mandino's characters have no more depth than his messages, which feature all the profundity of fortune-cookie sayings ("Go the extra mile!"; "Never hide behind busy work"; "Never allow anyone to rain on your parade"), his latest sentimental tale about miracles and the mysteries of life will no doubt find a readership.

From Library Journal

Widely acclaimed motivational speaker and writer Mandino (The Greatest Salesman in the World, 1967) teaches the power of the unlimited possibilities of God's care in this nicely crafted parable. Bart Manning, a retired inspirational speaker, learns seven simple steps, including going the extra mile and never neglecting the little things from Patrick Donne, a gifted spellbinding speaker. Though simplistic and predictable, the book will find its audience among fans of Mandino, Robert Schuller, and Norman Vincent Peale. Recommended for most libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars SPELLBINDER'S GIFT, August 20, 2004
This review is from: Spellbinder's Gift (Paperback)

...and what a 'GIFT' it is!

I have read several motivational/inspirational books that take you on a rollercoaster ride and this is one of them.

OG is a master at weaving you like a homemade basket. He skillfully places words and moments in specific places so you feel like you are gently being carried in and out of a world that is so real. You find at the end...that it is REAL!

I am presently reading Mr. Mandino's 'The Greatest Salesman in the World'. I so-called read it many times before, but this time, i am paying attention and doing exactly what the book says. I am up to the 7th scroll and I won't be finished with the scrolls until the beginning of 2005. You have to start somewhere! I will keep you posted on my progress and pray that you are progressing as well from all books that propel the human spirit to soar.

'Spellbinder's Gift' will definitely keep you SPELLBOUND.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, August 6, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Spellbinder's Gift (Paperback)
The late Mr Mandino has really "motivated" me with this amazing book. I thought his "The Choice" was great, but must put this above it. It was part of the motivation in building my business and really did what was intended. I feel sure Mr Mandino and "Mr Donne" have become fast "friends"

5.0 out of 5 stars "Truly Spellbinding", December 27, 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: Spellbinder's Gift (Paperback)
No other book presents such a great example of an almost true to life story which concerns only three players, a popular, classic motivational speaker (Bart Manning), a "new-age" motivational speaker (Patrick Donne), and Bart's wife...contains secret ways to live your life to the fullest, one of it came out years ago...from Jesus. The presentation is very much far from the standard ways, you'll be surprised by the way the author did it.
