A little bit of everything, March 15, 2006
This review is from: Spellcraft, Hexcraft and Witchcraft (Paperback)
Originally published in 1977, this little book was a gold mine of information for the new practicing crafts person back then. Anna Riva put together a little booklet of about 83 pages that collected various spells and information for less cost than any of the occult books at that time. It was a cheap source of Occult information. And while some of it is very accurate, some of it was all Anna Riva's conclusions. The book is not one that is particularly pagan, but rather covers many belief systems. None of her books are really "pagan" and not "Wiccan" either. From Christian Mysticism to Voodoo, Hoodoo and witchcraft all the material in here is from diverse backgrounds. It comes from a variety of mostly non-attributed or generally attributed sources, from various cultures and practices. Some of it is easily recognizable, some of it is obscure and some of it is Ms. Riva's personal additions. But anyone purchasing this book will get more than their moneys worth. As it was then, it is still a book chock full of information that can be useful to the craft practitioner. This is an interesting little book, as I said, an older title, that, for the price, offers much information and is of a much broader working base than many of the other titles out there. Not for everyone, but is worth the price for those who are looking for something different. boudica

Great lil' spellbook!, August 21, 2007
This review is from: Spellcraft, Hexcraft and Witchcraft (Paperback)
This is another gem by Anna Riva that is very reasonably priced. Her books are for the most part, very good. I personally love the magical information presented in her books. She has some great examples of spells you can try. I personally enjoyed her write up on the Chupa Rosa -- that was a very interesting read. Overall, I recommened you get this book if you practice any form of witchcraft or if you are a Wiccan that is looking to expand their reading material and wants something a little more fresh and traditional, as this is not Wiccan material. some use, but not much..., March 19, 2010
This review is from: Spellcraft, Hexcraft and Witchcraft (Paperback)
I have to agree with some of the other reviewers - it is a hodge-podge of information, sometimes with no rhyme or reason for why it is there. There is also very little reference material or backup for the information presented, so take it with a grain of salt. Be aware that it is a tiny book, almost a pamphlet, and there is not a lot of introduction materials. If you are new to witchcraft or pagan magical systems, you might have a hard time understanding some of the material, and could put yourself in a bad position by practicing it with no training. It was definately not written for a beginner and can be vague at times. And for the record, it is not a Wiccan book. If you purchase it, don't complain that it goes against your belief system - the title of the book makes it very clear that it would. It is an interesting reference book, which is what I would use it for...but again, with a grain of salt. I like to compare her methods to ones online and in other books, to see what is common to all of them. That way, when I create my own individual ritual or spell, I can make sure the "pillars" are there and decorate with my own style.
