5.0 out of 5 stars Sweet and full of hope
This CD manufactures feelings reminiscent of my youth. Its honesty reminds me of my teen years, full of curiosity, in my room listening to The Smiths or The Damned. There is something more striking about this CD too, as if they know exactly what and where we end up. I hum Born in the '70s during meetings, putting a sweet spring in my step.

3.0 out of 5 stars Half an album
The first half of this CD is very enjoyable, catchy, melodic and fun. The last half is horrible. The band must have hurried to get the album out to fulfill a contractual obligation. The first half is filled with 60's pop influences, i.e. Beatles, Velvent Underground, but they make it their own. Very well crafted songs. The last half is a monotonous collection of...

5.0 out of 5 stars the more I listen, the more I want to listen, September 24, 2005

Good feeling, catchy melodies and harmonies with folky, psychedelic lyrics. Lots of acoustic guitar, always a plus. But there are a lot of different instruments on this record. The sum is greater than the parts. The album sounds familiar and new at the same time. It really is a new kind of pop music.

I haven't heard either the Shins or Califone, so I'll compare Fruit Bats to the Beatles, Kinks, Velvet Underground, maybe even early, pre-ambient Brian Eno. It's great music!

4.0 out of 5 stars good to the last drop, September 10, 2005

shades of the shins and belle and sebastian, wrapped in college radio fresh seal packaging. i found several tracks overly forlorn, but overall quite catchy. starts and finishes very strong, with a rollercoaster ride of content, theme, and tempo throughout. GREAT ALBUM!

The first half is filled with 60's pop influences, i.e. Beatles, Velvent Underground, but they make it their own. Very well crafted songs. The last half is a monotonous collection of unfinished songs. The meoldies found throughout the first part of the album, that sound so sweet to the ear at first, begin to sound annoying and repetitive by the end. This could have been a great great album if they finished it.

I bought "Spelled in Bones" knowing, in the back of my mind, that previous Fruit Bats albums have been merely okay and not good or great. Listening to "Spelled in Bones," I was taken aback at how refined their sound seems to have become. I don't want to leave too lengthy of a review, as I know everyone else will in the future, but I will say that Fruit Bats have attained the status of good in my mind instead of just okay. I wouldn't label them as a great band just yet (in my opinion, to be great a band should have at least four full-length albums, and Fruit Bats only have three), but it seems they are on their way.
