Spectrum Spelling gr2
Great book but a little easy for 2nd grade if you have a child that does fairly well in school get this one for 1st gr. Great books though (Spectrum is great), colorful nicely spread on pages not cluttered easy on the eyes if you know what I mean.I have many of their books and love them all!

Lots of busy-work, not much thought
Copying words over and over doesn't teach kids to spell. It just teaches them to copy words. Look at the Sylvan books as a better alternative--less mindless copying, more thinking about the sounds letters make and putting them into context.

I purchased Spectrum spelling grade 2, and grade 4 as well as Spectrum Language Arts grades 2 and 4, and have not found them to be useful as teaching tools. Perhaps they would be better strictly for review purposes. The instructions are understandable for the excercises following, however it is not always clear to children what the proper answer should be. If you are looking for a great language arts program with instruction and excersises covering spelling, grammar, phonics, reading and writing, look to "Learning Language Arts Through Literature" from Common Sense Press instead.
