Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Though his masterful 1989 debut, Killin' Time, had once placed him neck and neck with Garth Brooks in the running for Nashville's most important New Traditionalist, Clint Black never made music that sounded as muscular or inspired. At times--his 1990 follow-up, Put Yourself in My Shoes, for instance--you could hear his wheels turn, as if he were trying too hard to do something that once came easy. However, on Spend My Time, his first album in nearly four years and the debut release for Equity (where Black is a partner), the stylish Texan takes full responsibility for everything--writing every tune, producing the disc, and letting his musicians stretch out in free-range solos. On the whole, he's more reflective than usual, taking stock of the fact that he's no longer a young gunslinger ("Spend My Time") and admitting that he's still smarting about his tumble from grace ("We All Fall Down"). Black still occasionally comes up with a bumbling, empty lyric ("All I need is everything I want"), something that has long marred his work. But he also conjures some of the most beautiful and wistful love songs of his career. If his days as a Number One hit maker are over, in the soaring ballads "My Imagination" and "Just Like You and Me" he proves he's only now really exploring his limits as an artist. --Alanna Nash

5.0 out of 5 stars WELL WORTH THE WAIT!, March 3, 2004
By D. McAllister "MRD" (Somewhere in the Field) - See all my reviews
As an aficionado of the great Clint Black I had begun to wonder where he had gotten to. Four years since his last album. What was that all about. Retired? Enjoying the good life? Raising horses? What?

I continued to listen to others of my Clint Black favorites like PUT YOURSELF IN MY SHOES, THE HARD WAY, D'LECTRIFIED and NO TIME TO KILL, each time wondering where the heck Black was and all the while hoping that he would get back in the studio and give us something new.

Well the wait is over and, given the magnificent presentations and tone poetry of his new album, SPEND MY TIME, it was well worth it. In fact this album transcends everything that has defined Black's abilities in the past and introduces us to a talent that seems to be, if it's possible, absolutely perfected. The album includes such soon-to-be hits as the title track, SPEND MY TIME, A MIND TO and two ballads, MY IMAGINATION and JUST LIKE YOU AND ME, that are about as beautiful and spellbinding as any that I have ever heard before.

Welcome back Mr. Black! Let's hope there's a lot more from where SPEND MY TIME apparently came from.

THE HORSEMAN

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome back Clint!, March 20, 2004
It seems like forever since we heard anything from Clint Black, was it worth the wait? Boy was it! This is one of the best CD's we've gotten from him. Spend My Time is great, the upbeat tune of "The Boogie Man" is awesome, I can't recommend this CD enough to country music fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Country Dude, March 18, 2004
By A Customer
I was kind of timid at first in getting this cd. I was leaning toward the new Kenny Chesney cd, and something told me to get the new Clint Black cd. I made the right choice, because this cd really keeps to country without all of the pop music being put into country through these years. This album has something for everyone. "Spend My Time" is a song Clint Black put a bunch of heart into. Nearly everyone can relate to the song. Every track is good music making, and I am glad Clint Black is keeping the country spirt alive with his music. God Bless You Clint, and keep making wonderful music. I will keep listening.
