WELL WORTH THE WAIT!,
By D. McAllister "MRD" (Somewhere in the Field) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spend My Time (Audio CD)
As an aficionado of the great Clint Black I had begun to wonder where he had gotten to. Four years since his last album. What was that all about. Retired? Enjoying the good life? Raising horses? What?I continued to listen to others of my Clint Black favorites like PUT YOURSELF IN MY SHOES, THE HARD WAY, D'LECTRIFIED and NO TIME TO KILL, each time wondering where the heck Black was and all the while hoping that he would get back in the studio and give us something new. Well the wait is over and, given the magnificent presentations and tone poetry of his new album, SPEND MY TIME, it was well worth it. In fact this album transcends everything that has defined Black's abilities in the past and introduces us to a talent that seems to be, if it's possible, absolutely perfected. The album includes such soon-to-be hits as the title track, SPEND MY TIME, A MIND TO and two ballads, MY IMAGINATION and JUST LIKE YOU AND ME, that are about as beautiful and spellbinding as any that I have ever heard before. Welcome back Mr. Black! Let's hope there's a lot more from where SPEND MY TIME apparently came from. THE HORSEMAN

It seems like forever since we heard anything from Clint Black, was it worth the wait? Boy was it! This is one of the best CD's we've gotten from him. Spend My Time is great, the upbeat tune of "The Boogie Man" is awesome, I can't recommend this CD enough to country music fans.

Country Dude,

I was kind of timid at first in getting this cd. I was leaning toward the new Kenny Chesney cd, and something told me to get the new Clint Black cd. I made the right choice, because this cd really keeps to country without all of the pop music being put into country through these years. This album has something for everyone. "Spend My Time" is a song Clint Black put a bunch of heart into. Nearly everyone can relate to the song. Every track is good music making, and I am glad Clint Black is keeping the country spirt alive with his music. God Bless You Clint, and keep making wonderful music. I will keep listening.

I have to say that after 4 years, Clint Black sounds like he is refreshed as he has written and produced some of the best material I have heard from him as of late. There's not a bad track on this disc and each can stand on its own merit. I'm glad to see that he's back and hopefully this will put him back and keep him on the charts where he belongs.

I love it!,

I haven't been a fan of Clint Black's for long but I love this CD. Of course, there's his single "Spend My Time" but I also love "My Imagination" and "Just Like You and Me". The CD has a good mix of ballands and up tempo songs. It's different than other country and it's refreshing. If you like his other CD's or even just the one single, I would recommend this CD. It's excellent!

WOW-this album is terrific in every way there is,I LOVE IT-Clint stays true to self and still rocks classic country style,it can be compared with his early work but I still believe this cd holds it's own merit and style in a real upfront fashion-trust me,you'll love it just as much as I do.

+3/4 -- Black's voice is more moving than his material,

Black's first album in four years finds his artistic reach expanding. In addition to having penned the album's dozen tracks, Black served as producer for his hand-picked band and recorded for his own EMG imprint. With aesthetic and commercial controls both in-hand, Black has turned out a surprisingly sophisticated collection of ballads and funk-inflected mid-tempo numbers.Entering his forties with a wife and child, Black contemplates the changing priorities of middle-age ("Spend My Time") as well as his own human frailties ("We All Fall Down"). The latter sports a soulful mix of organ, piano harmonica, banjo and John Robinson's terrific staccato second-line drumming; the extended instrumental coda is especially fine. Robinson's drumming returns to drive the paranoid dot-com futurism of "Haywire," and Black maintains a blusey mid-tempo punch with "Everything I Need" and "The Boogie Man." The album's ballads are a more mixed lot. A few make original, personal turns, like the introspective title track and the theatrical "A Lover's Clown." Others slip into Nashville-bland melodies and lyrics. It's a treat to hear Black integrating jazz, blues and funk flavors so effortlessly into his mid-tempo songs, and to discover how richly his voice fits a variety of moods and tones. His criticism of major label conventions and his cash on the barrelhead are brave, confident moves; whether or not he finds his way back to the charts, there's clearly a rich artistic future ahead. 3-3/4 stars, if allowed fractional ratings.

Black is Back!,

I may be off, but it seems like Clint Black challenges himself to overcome the natural apathy an artist can take when they've proven themselves, their style has gone out, and the creative well has run dry. After a long stretch of time off, he produced "Nothing But the Tail Lights" - in my opinion, his best piece of musical work in his career - along with one of the best love songs of his career "Something That We Do". Clint has proven again that taking 4 years off can work if the songs are right. Don't be fooled by the weak new material on Greatest Hits 2 or "D'lectrified" - "Spend My Time" is Clint's best work since "Tail lights". I honestly get the feeling he put experimental music and fillers on those projects and saved his best for this project. This time, it appears, he challenges himself vocally and lyrically. The reflective title track is one of Clint's pieces of work in years, while "My Imagination" and "Just Like You and Me" are solid ballads, and "A Mind To" and "A Lover's Clown" are some of the best written pieces he's ever penned. The project is solid track for track. Clint Black is a true artist in every sense of the word. Got to hand it to the man - to write, sing, and produce great music is a rare rare commodity in music of any genre, especially Nashville. Hopefully newer artists will take learn from a man who has been able to stretch a career of great work over 3 decades.

Haunting Turn for the Young Man in Black,
By A Customer
This review is from: Spend My Time (Audio CD)
Country legend status is never given easily, it is earned. Here Clint Black stakes his claim with a solid effort that reaches out to the soul and well as the heart. Escaping his young honky tonk tunes, Black turns his attention inward and begins reflecting on life through his music. One of the most talented music makers ever to grace country music, Black appears to be heading down the same road traveled by the greats before him. One cannot help but think that the original Man in Black is up there smiling down upon the younger Black and saying "You tell'um son".

Great Voice, Excellent Instrumentals,
By Adam (MN, USA) - See all my reviews

I purchased this album the summer after it was released (more than a year ago), and it still remains one of my favorites. To be honest, I didn't really know much about Clint Black before I got it, but I have since purchased every one of his CDs and now consider him my favorite male artist. His vocals are always superb, with this album containing some of his most powerful work to date. The Songs "My Imagination", "She's Leaving", "Just Like You and Me", and "Someone Else's Tears" are very strong and filled with pure, believable emotion. In addition to these slower songs, there are some fun up-tempo pieces, including "Everything I Need" and "The Boogie Man". Black's excellent harmonica skills take a prominent role in the latter, as well as in "We All Fall Down". With all that said, this album is a bit pop-ish, but it still contains enough solid country qualities to make it an excellent addition to my collection. I highly recommend it!
