Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

In 1999 the Donnas reached the age where they could Get Skintight. Then the racy foursome went on to Turn 21 in 2001. And for 2002, theirs is either an invitation or an offer to Spend the Night. And it'll be a whopper of a night. "It's on the Rocks" opens the evening on an anthemic note. The stoner paean "Pass It Around" appears just past midpoint, and "5 O'Clock in the Morning" closes the event. What's in between? Straight-ahead drumbeats, snarling guitars, and sassy vocals are the band's calling cards, and they're all very much in evidence here. Songs like "Take It Off" and "Please Don't Tease" are built upon bouncing melodies that are revved by choppy pop-punk guitar and simple rhymes ("tease" and "knees," for example). The Donnas' party--"Take Me to the Backseat" included--doesn't rage so much as it embraces a kind of postpunk free love that swaggers like the Ramones circa "Rockaway Beach." --Andrew Bartlett

Product Description

One of America's most raucous and irreverent bands are back and they're brasher and brighter than ever! The Donnas' eagerly awaited Atlantic debut is the follow-up to last year's critically acclaimed breakthrough, THE DONNAS TURN 21. Produced by Jason Carmer and Robert Shimp, SPEND THE NIGHT finds the San Francisco-based quartet at their powerpop-rockin' best. Tracks like "Take It Off" and "Backseat" are all fit to burst with that patented Donna's attitude - loud guitars, punky hooks, and irresistible energy. Sexy and sharp, the Donnas' SPEND THE NIGHT is so much fun you'll want to stay for breakfast.

5.0 out of 5 stars The chicks that have the licks... March 1, 2003
Format:Audio CD
Took a chance on The Donnas and DAMN, did I win big...these girls ROCK!!! They're not Metal or punk, but more straight hard rock, no-frills, upbeat and fast; the kind you'd wish more girls would play. After hearing ten million women sing sappy ballads of heartbreak, it's damned refreshing to hear a girl DEMAND "Take me to the backseat". I can't think of who to compare them to since most girl bands don't rock this hard...maybe if the Runaways and AC/DC collided in a car crash, the Donnas would emerge. There's no great instrumental prowess but there doesn't need to be any: three minutes, three chords, they're in, they're out, next please. The only semi-slow song on the CD is "Too bad about your girl", and that's not even that slow. One of the best things about The Donnas is they actually CELEBRATE casual sex/getting laid (at least according to their lyrics) instead of crying over it like Britney or her ilk...If you don't "Take it off" fast enough they'd probably break a bottle over your head, and "Pass it around" might just as well mean a guy's johnson as well as a drink. Can't wait to see them on tour...

4.0 out of 5 stars Move Over Joan Jett....The Donnas Are Here! November 15, 2002
Format:Audio CD
The Donnas have abandon the punk-rock sound of there first few albums and have strayed into "Riot Girl", Hard Rock Territory.
Where the Donnas could often be descirbed as a female Ramones, the new album blends the sounds of a harder rocking Joan Jett, with Kiss & AC/DC. If anyone out there has ever heard of the great Australian band, Angel City...this album sounds alot like there harder rocking music. Of course the Ramones/Punk influences are still here, but mainly in the lyrical content and song structure. The sound is pure, straight ahead rock. The only fault I see here is some of the ruff edges have been smoothed over production wise and the guitar riffs/solos seem to be less frequent. The vocals also seem to be more studio "enhanced" than before.
Regardless in the age of Pink, Spears, and Christina...its great to see some of my teenage heros of the 70's and 80's have rubbed off on the newer generation.
Actually minus Ace Frehley, this is the best album KISS never did!!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE RETURN OF ROCK 'N ROLL November 8, 2002
Format:Audio CD
WARNING: THE DONNAS WILL MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU'RE SEVENTEEN! This music will make you feel rebellious, reckless, horny, joyful, invincible. It's everything good about Rock 'n Roll - loud, fast, irreverent, and most of all, FUN! When you throw this baby on, you'll be playing air guitar, desk drums, and singing out loud! Every song has a hook to it that pulls you right in. The first single, "Take it off", is a monster, joined by the opening track "It's on the Rocks" as well as "Please Don't Tease" and "Too Bad About Your Girl" and . . . ah, hell, the whole album ROCKS! These ladies play with an energy that cannot be denied! The album also comes with a great DVD which includes an interview of the band by Andy Dick, a behind-the-scenes look at the recording of the album, and a really funny video for "Do You Wanna Hit It" from their previous release _The Donnas Turn 21_. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED - NOW CHECK IT OUT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Remember when rock was fun? May 4, 2003
Format:Audio CD
A perfect rock album. Yep, these four girls, using the standard "bass, guitars, drums and vocals" rock instrumentation, singing simple, fresh, often naughty lyrics and slashing away with huge power chords and twisty solos...mostly at breakneck tempos...have crafted an outstanding rock album...rock with a capital "R", "A", "W" and "K".
It's a fun listen. You'll smile while pumping your fist and flailing away on your air guitar.
The single "Take It Off" gives you a good idea of the record...if you like it, you'll totally enjoy the rest of the album.
But, there's hardly any tunes I skip now...it's maddeningly catchy.
Check out these up and coming bands now...The Ataris, The Androids, The Exies...and The Donnas. All tuneful, driving, great rock...this is a great time to be listening to this type of music. Too bad radio/MTV hasn't picked up on all this good stuff. I've had enough of hip hop and rap metal...

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock Is Back! September 8, 2003
Format:Audio CD
Let me first start by saying that I just turned 44 years old. I had pretty much given up finding anything worth listening to in today's version of what passes for Rock 'n' Roll. Todays' bands all sound to me like they have interchangable lead singers. That is until I heard The Donnas on the Freaky Friday soundtrack. "Backstage" blew me away. It is by far, the best track on that CD. I had heard of them before, but I just assumed that they were another pop-grunge-metal ripoff. Boy, was I wrong!
I went out and bought "Spend The Night" and I am very excited about this CD. Initially, the tempo of the songs being essentially the same, kind of threw me off. However, the more I listen to the CD, the more I like it. This is the straight ahead Rock that I remember from my youth. I hear pieces of The Ramones, AC/DC, Joan Jett, Heart, etc... on this CD. I went to their website and discovered that they have been playing together since junior high! Wow! A band that wasn't put together by a record executive!
All I can say is, that if The Donnas keep rockin' like they are, I see nothing but success for them in the future!
