The chicks that have the licks...,
By Kenneth Kupstis (Orlando, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spend the Night (Audio CD)
Took a chance on The Donnas and DAMN, did I win big...these girls ROCK!!! They're not Metal or punk, but more straight hard rock, no-frills, upbeat and fast; the kind you'd wish more girls would play. After hearing ten million women sing sappy ballads of heartbreak, it's damned refreshing to hear a girl DEMAND "Take me to the backseat". I can't think of who to compare them to since most girl bands don't rock this hard...maybe if the Runaways and AC/DC collided in a car crash, the Donnas would emerge. There's no great instrumental prowess but there doesn't need to be any: three minutes, three chords, they're in, they're out, next please. The only semi-slow song on the CD is "Too bad about your girl", and that's not even that slow. One of the best things about The Donnas is they actually CELEBRATE casual sex/getting laid (at least according to their lyrics) instead of crying over it like Britney or her ilk...If you don't "Take it off" fast enough they'd probably break a bottle over your head, and "Pass it around" might just as well mean a guy's johnson as well as a drink. Can't wait to see them on tour...

Move Over Joan Jett....The Donnas Are Here!,
By "The Woj" (Downers Grove, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spend the Night (Audio CD)
The Donnas have abandon the punk-rock sound of there first few albums and have strayed into "Riot Girl", Hard Rock Territory.Where the Donnas could often be descirbed as a female Ramones, the new album blends the sounds of a harder rocking Joan Jett, with Kiss & AC/DC. If anyone out there has ever heard of the great Australian band, Angel City...this album sounds alot like there harder rocking music. Of course the Ramones/Punk influences are still here, but mainly in the lyrical content and song structure. The sound is pure, straight ahead rock. The only fault I see here is some of the ruff edges have been smoothed over production wise and the guitar riffs/solos seem to be less frequent. The vocals also seem to be more studio "enhanced" than before. Regardless in the age of Pink, Spears, and Christina...its great to see some of my teenage heros of the 70's and 80's have rubbed off on the newer generation. Actually minus Ace Frehley, this is the best album KISS never did!!

THE RETURN OF ROCK 'N ROLL,
By
This review is from: Spend the Night (Audio CD)
WARNING: THE DONNAS WILL MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU'RE SEVENTEEN! This music will make you feel rebellious, reckless, horny, joyful, invincible. It's everything good about Rock 'n Roll - loud, fast, irreverent, and most of all, FUN! When you throw this baby on, you'll be playing air guitar, desk drums, and singing out loud! Every song has a hook to it that pulls you right in. The first single, "Take it off", is a monster, joined by the opening track "It's on the Rocks" as well as "Please Don't Tease" and "Too Bad About Your Girl" and . . . ah, hell, the whole album ROCKS! These ladies play with an energy that cannot be denied! The album also comes with a great DVD which includes an interview of the band by Andy Dick, a behind-the-scenes look at the recording of the album, and a really funny video for "Do You Wanna Hit It" from their previous release _The Donnas Turn 21_. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED - NOW CHECK IT OUT!
