5.0 out of 5 stars The chicks that have the licks...
Took a chance on The Donnas and DAMN, did I win big...these girls ROCK!!! They're not Metal or punk, but more straight hard rock, no-frills, upbeat and fast; the kind you'd wish more girls would play. After hearing ten million women sing sappy ballads of heartbreak, it's damned refreshing to hear a girl DEMAND "Take me to the backseat". I can't think of who to compare...

3.0 out of 5 stars I miss Lookout Records
In 2 days I'll see the Donnas in NYC for the 4th time - I've only seen the Ramones more - so I'm kinda a groupie and one of those icky over 30 guys they write about. Regardless, Spend the Night is a sad sham, and from the cover art to the overproduction its not the kick [butt] rock and roll that we've all come to love from them. After the first 5 songs there's no...

I can't think of who to compare them to since most girl bands don't rock this hard...maybe if the Runaways and AC/DC collided in a car crash, the Donnas would emerge. There's no great instrumental prowess but there doesn't need to be any: three minutes, three chords, they're in, they're out, next please. The only semi-slow song on the CD is "Too bad about your girl", and that's not even that slow. One of the best things about The Donnas is they actually CELEBRATE casual sex/getting laid (at least according to their lyrics) instead of crying over it like Britney or her ilk...If you don't "Take it off" fast enough they'd probably break a bottle over your head, and "Pass it around" might just as well mean a guy's johnson as well as a drink. Can't wait to see them on tour...

4.0 out of 5 stars Move Over Joan Jett....The Donnas Are Here!, November 15, 2002
By
"The Woj" (Downers Grove, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spend the Night (Audio CD)
The Donnas have abandon the punk-rock sound of there first few albums and have strayed into "Riot Girl", Hard Rock Territory.
Where the Donnas could often be descirbed as a female Ramones, the new album blends the sounds of a harder rocking Joan Jett, with Kiss & AC/DC. If anyone out there has ever heard of the great Australian band, Angel City...this album sounds alot like there harder rocking music. Of course the Ramones/Punk influences are still here, but mainly in the lyrical content and song structure. The sound is pure, straight ahead rock. The only fault I see here is some of the ruff edges have been smoothed over production wise and the guitar riffs/solos seem to be less frequent. The vocals also seem to be more studio "enhanced" than before.
Regardless in the age of Pink, Spears, and Christina...its great to see some of my teenage heros of the 70's and 80's have rubbed off on the newer generation.
Actually minus Ace Frehley, this is the best album KISS never did!!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE RETURN OF ROCK 'N ROLL, November 8, 2002

WARNING: THE DONNAS WILL MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU'RE SEVENTEEN! This music will make you feel rebellious, reckless, horny, joyful, invincible. It's everything good about Rock 'n Roll - loud, fast, irreverent, and most of all, FUN! When you throw this baby on, you'll be playing air guitar, desk drums, and singing out loud! Every song has a hook to it that pulls you right in. The first single, "Take it off", is a monster, joined by the opening track "It's on the Rocks" as well as "Please Don't Tease" and "Too Bad About Your Girl" and . . . ah, hell, the whole album ROCKS! These ladies play with an energy that cannot be denied! The album also comes with a great DVD which includes an interview of the band by Andy Dick, a behind-the-scenes look at the recording of the album, and a really funny video for "Do You Wanna Hit It" from their previous release _The Donnas Turn 21_. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED - NOW CHECK IT OUT!

5.0 out of 5 stars Remember when rock was fun?, May 4, 2003

A perfect rock album. Yep, these four girls, using the standard "bass, guitars, drums and vocals" rock instrumentation, singing simple, fresh, often naughty lyrics and slashing away with huge power chords and twisty solos...mostly at breakneck tempos...have crafted an outstanding rock album...rock with a capital "R", "A", "W" and "K".
It's a fun listen. You'll smile while pumping your fist and flailing away on your air guitar.
The single "Take It Off" gives you a good idea of the record...if you like it, you'll totally enjoy the rest of the album.
But, there's hardly any tunes I skip now...it's maddeningly catchy.
Check out these up and coming bands now...The Ataris, The Androids, The Exies...and The Donnas. All tuneful, driving, great rock...this is a great time to be listening to this type of music. Too bad radio/MTV hasn't picked up on all this good stuff. I've had enough of hip hop and rap metal...

5.0 out of 5 stars Rock Is Back!, September 8, 2003
By
Jerry S Lambert (Warren, MI United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spend the Night (Audio CD)
Let me first start by saying that I just turned 44 years old. I had pretty much given up finding anything worth listening to in today's version of what passes for Rock 'n' Roll. Todays' bands all sound to me like they have interchangable lead singers. That is until I heard The Donnas on the Freaky Friday soundtrack. "Backstage" blew me away. It is by far, the best track on that CD. I had heard of them before, but I just assumed that they were another pop-grunge-metal ripoff. Boy, was I wrong!

I went out and bought "Spend The Night" and I am very excited about this CD. Initially, the tempo of the songs being essentially the same, kind of threw me off. However, the more I listen to the CD, the more I like it. This is the straight ahead Rock that I remember from my youth. I hear pieces of The Ramones, AC/DC, Joan Jett, Heart, etc... on this CD. I went to their website and discovered that they have been playing together since junior high! Wow! A band that wasn't put together by a record executive!

All I can say is, that if The Donnas keep rockin' like they are, I see nothing but success for them in the future!

4.0 out of 5 stars Riotous Fun!, November 19, 2002
By
Eric Swanger (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews

My second favorite Donnas CD, right behind "Get Skintight."

The Donnas are moving away from their blatant earlier influences, like the Ramones, and finally coming up with their own riotous hard-rock bad-girl sound. In a sea of terribly mediocre male-led rock bands...they are a complete standout, and pretty outstanding! They have a great muscular layered guitar sound that puts any peers to shame

Its worth it for "Who Invited You" and "Take it Off" alone, but every track has their patented teenage bratty sex-kitten sound that will rock any dorm room or frat house, or condo (as the case may be). In a time where mindless bubblegum pop rules amid a few ambitious great rock outfits, the Donnas are a real welcomed guilty pleasure.

FYI: If you have a Mac like I do, you'll have no problem playing the CD and copying the tracks to your favorite MP3 program, like iTunes. An external CD burner is what I would recommend for those who can't play CDs like these on their computers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crankin' tunes- this CD is damned addictive!, December 26, 2002
This review is from: Spend the Night (Audio CD)
I first saw The Donnas on my local cable channel's rock music "station," where they play new and upcoming artists. Not that The Donnas are that "new," they've been around a good 10 years... but this is the first I ever heard of them, as I listened to "Take It Off." The next day I was in Sam Goody buying the album. It takes a damn good band to get me to buy an album based on one song, and I was not disappointed.

The album, in its straightforward riffs, driving bass, and nonwavering drums, cranks in a way reminiscent of AC/DC's "Back In Black." The songs are the feel-good, sexually suggestive, fun-loving ones that will probably be a staple at college parties and Spring Break. Listening to four young women sing about sex, guys, etc. the way Brian Johnson and Bon Scott might about girls is refreshing in a way... it reminds me of a Sarah Michelle Gellar line from Cruel Intentions- "God forbid I have an opinion and enjoy sex!"

Great album!

Regardless, Spend the Night is a sad sham, and from the cover art to the overproduction its not the kick [butt] rock and roll that we've all come to love from them. After the first 5 songs there's no reason to listen anymore, as they all sound the same. I wish they had remained with Lookout! records or were allowed a cooler producer - and I bet they feel the same. Cool interview in Nylon will tell you what you want to hear. The ugly truth about corporate rawk. PS - Donna R is purrfect.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tonight we're gonna party like it's 1979, August 26, 2006
This review is from: Spend the Night (Audio CD)
"Spend the Night" is one of the best, most [...]-kicking rock 'n' roll albums I've heard in years. No, it's not the most original platter, and yes, there is some similarity between the songs (the production, general mood and tempo don't vary a lot).

But the songs are extremely well-crafted, the guitar sound is among the best I've heard, and vocalist Donna A (Brett Anderson) has a great, everywoman voice and a plainspoken in-your-face way with words that's just impossible to resist. I wanna pump my fist in the air and sing along with every song, and there ain't many albums that make me do that.

Listen, I'm 44 years old, I remember when there were tons of albums that sounded like this -- "life's a party, get a buzz on, get laid" -- what the heck happened? Don't you young people still enjoy this sort of thing? Geez, I still do.

The Donnas have got to be major fans of Kiss, AC/DC and Judas Priest, and I am not complaining. Those bands knew how to write riffs that stuck, moved, slithered, slunk, rebounded and wrapped around, always at the right time. They had vocalists who understood how to put together a catchy vocal melody that complemented the rhythm guitar track. They had producers who knew how to make the whole mess sound big and thick.

Well, the Donnas have all that stuff, too. And while it's not fair to pigeonhole them as simply an "all-girl rock band," I will go ahead do it and say they are the best "all-girl rock band" I've ever heard. And the best songs on this album -- including "Take It Off," "You Wanna Get Me High," "I Don't Care (So There)," "Pass It Around"," "Too Bad About Your Girl" and "Not the One" are worthy of the band's (apparent) heroes.
