Book Description

May 6, 2009

Today, Americans are saving less, carrying larger debt loads, losing their homes to foreclosure, and filing bankruptcy in record numbers. People are spending more than they can afford, and many feel guilty, anxious, and overwhelmed as a result.

Moving beyond the advice of financial planners who only treat the symptoms of overspending, in Spent Sally Palaian offers proven plans for taking on a range of personal issues with money by examining those underlying emotional, familial, and societal factors that trigger spending behaviors.

Spent teaches readers to control shopping, pay off debt, develop budgets, and become financially competent through:

  • Easy-to-use assessment tools designed to pinpoint the severity of a problem
  • Questionnaires that facilitate the exploration of the root causes of unhealthy financial behaviors
  • User-friendly exercises created to influence change from within

Palaian's system for financial recovery is designed to not only help excessive spenders overcome their spending habits, but also to help hoarders, financial codependents, and underachievers let go of fears, take responsibility for their actions, and break unhealthy cycles. Spent empowers people in every financial predicament to disentangle their financial messes to achieve lasting, positive change and a healthy view of one's true value in life.

Most people would fear that a book like this would tell you what you can't spend your money on, what you shouldn't buy and what you can no longer afford to enjoy in life given your financial situation.

This book is *not* about any of the above.

Dr. Sally Palaian has come up with ways to help you truly understand what you can afford to buy, how to get the things you want in life, (whatever that is), without going into debt, and most importantly--how to get rid of debt without putting your life on hold!!

I highly recommend this important book for individuals and couples.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book on How to Get Straight with Money, October 30, 2009
By
Joe Bavonese, PhD (Royal Oak, MI United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spent: Break the Buying Obsession and Discover Your True Worth (Paperback)
Dr. Sally Palaian has written a much-needed book about people's personal relationship with money - and the timing couldn't be better. As thousands of people struggle with the consequences of the economic downturn of 2008, this book offers hope and guidance for getting clear about your money issues. There are useful exercises here for individuals and couples who struggle with compulsive spending; hiding purchases; inability to control debt and lack of planning for the future. I especially like the numerous clear examples and exercises that allow anyone to apply this information to their unique situation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful material, February 17, 2010

This review is from: Spent: Break the Buying Obsession and Discover Your True Worth (Paperback)
This book has been very helpful to understand what, when and why I spend like I do. It's a very objective tool to help you in personal growth. It's not boring or dry or completely out of sync with reality as some of the other "self help" financial books I've tried. I highly recommend it. This was money well "Spent!"
