5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent! Goldenthal at his bone-chilling best!
The movie may have been a bad attempt at adapting Crichton's classic novel, but Elliot Goldenthal's music is the one thing about the film that was excellent. 3.0 out of 5 stars Lovley music - but why only 30 minutes?
This music is so well-made that I do actually find it surpricing that this CD is not much longer than a half hour. But, you can't get everything...

The music itself is very good, just as horrofying as in the Event Horizon Soundtrack (which I would like give 5 stars in all). But very short. When a track i finished it doesn't really feel like it should be finished,...

The movie may have been a bad attempt at adapting Crichton's classic novel, but Elliot Goldenthal's music is the one thing about the film that was excellent. It captured all the mystery, all the suspense, and all the darkness of the film with startlingly haunting accuracy. Who cares why the CD is so short! Many of the cues used on the CD are simply re-hashed in the film in several spots. This soundtrack gives us the best impression of Goldenthal's score. This may not be his greatest, but Mr. Goldenthal's score to Sphere is a triumph of brilliantly colorful, eclectic, and hauntingly stirring film music. This is a must have for any Goldenthal fan!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredibly atmospheric and highly creative soundtrack., September 10, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Sphere: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This soundtrack is absolutely amazing. The first two tracks immediately places you in the dark and atmospheric setting of the movie, Sphere... especially the "Main Titles" track. Then, the next track immediatly blasts you with loud orchestra music (I hate that track for that reason). The next few tracks ("The Gift", and "Sphere Discovery") immediately portrays the wonder behind the movie's mystery, the "Sphere". The next songs, especially "Wave", sends you down into the psycological horror that the charactors are experiencing. The remaining tracks send you through some incredibly tense moments and nighmarish sequences that greatly enhance the movie's horror sequences. Then the last track gives you a sigh of relief when all the incredibly tense tracks are through. It's an incredible soundtrack that creates the most incredible, threatening, and dark atmosphere that a soundtrack could ever have. This soundtrack uses an extremely creative style to make it's horrifying, and nighmarish setting, especially songs like "Main Titles" and the second half of the song, "Water Snake". This is an amazing CD to listen to, and I highly recommend you buy it.

The music itself is very good, just as horrofying as in the Event Horizon Soundtrack (which I would like give 5 stars in all). But very short. When a track i finished it doesn't really feel like it should be finished, most are even under two minutes long.

but if you are just searching for perfect Hallowen-music, and are not out here for a long CD, you should really buy this one. AND the Event Horizon Soundtrack.

3.0 out of 5 stars Classic Goldenthal but way too short, July 25, 1999
This review is from: Sphere: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I'm guessing the reason this CD is so short is that to cut down on expensive orchestra time the film used alot of repeated cues. That's probably also why the main theme, which is so noteworthy in the film, only appears once on the CD which is a shame. Or maybe it's partly because Goldenthal must have been feeling a little nevouse about the fact that it sounds alot like he fell asleep listening to Elfman's Edward Scissorhands the day before he penned the theme.

The score also contain some haunting strings as well as the madness we know and love from Godenthal but overall I would only recommend this score for Goldenthal fanatics and even then, try and get it second-hand.

By the way Goldenthal better watch out 'cos newcomer Don Davis is starting to compete in the clank and bang musical stakes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Too short and loses the "ominous feeling" of the movie, June 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sphere: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
I read the book, watched the movie, and I really liked the way the music in the movie gave it that evil bass overtone...

The CD seems to focus on the "rememberable" trebel "highlights" of the movie soundtrack ... and thats it.

I guess what i wanted was the long bass sections of the soundtrack (like the scene in the movie where Norman is alone staring at the sphere).

So bewarned, it doesn't quite catch the moody "dark ship" feeling in my opinion.

3.0 out of 5 stars extremely short..., August 13, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sphere: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
well, the cd just came today. my initial reaction is good. not yea! whoopie! good! rather, just a regular ol' good--a little above satisfactory.

Honestly, I am pretty surprised by that. When i watch the movie, i find the accompanying music captivating, but listening to just the music w/o the movie is... well, it is just not the same.

my opinion is buy the book! tape the movie on hbo.. and if you really have money to burn, donate some of it to charity.
