Dark matter, Colony's, Delerium.,
By Joel Youngblood (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spheres (Audio CD)
This is the first of what I like to consider "mid" Delerium. That is, when the started to move away from the really dark sounds of the earlier work (like the frightening "Spiritual Archives" which has given me nightmares). This is first of two "Spheres" albums, that seem to be striving (and definately acheiving) a "space" sound. Tracks like "Monolith" and "Dark Matter" show that they are paying tribute to Sci-fi films, and the "sound" in general. To me, the standout tracks are "Transmitter", with its nice hypey beet, "Wavelenght" with its dark synth, "Colony" with its twangy sounds, and opera-esque feel, "Dark Matters" "endless space" feel, and "Cloud Barriers" feeling of immeninet discovery.

The real Delerium album,
By "peer213" (The Netherlands) - See all my reviews

O man and woman, hold your breath for an hour long flight through the outer regions of space with this terrific album. Obviously recorded on Rhys @ Bills's darkest hours, but still very relaxing and peaceful. At he end of the record you feel cleansed and this special warmth. It comes very close to the true essence of music and life itself. Minimal but fantastic soundscapes for the real ambient lovers, not for the people who jumped in at Karma and/or Silence and believe to find some songs sounding like Enigma. I have been listening to FLA, Intermix, Noise Unit, Delerium, etc. for a long time, and from the 26 albums i own of those two guys i think it's one of the greatest. Absolute darkness while playing the record recommendend.

Delerium - 'Spheres' (Cleopatra),
By
This review is from: Spheres (Audio CD)
What drew me to this CD was the track "Dark Matter" that I first heard on the various artists 'Space Daze' 2-CD(see my review). This is the ONLY Delerium disc I have.I consider this project that includes players Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber to be 'dark ambient'.Key tunes are the twelve-minute "Colony","Cloud Barrier" and the previously mentioned "Dark Matter"(disc's best cut).Might appeal to fans of Front Line Assembly,Dead Can Dance,Breathless and Front 242.Give it a listen.

Excellent ambient disc.,

This is my favorite Delerium album. It's by far the most spacey and minimalist. I almost didn't give it a fair shake because the samples of HAL from 2001 in the beginning of the first track are so obvious and silly that they make me laugh, but the other five tracks are really top-notch stuff, especially track 6 which is a very beautiful ambient piece a la Brian Eno's "Apollo" or early Tangerine Dream (but with better production). "Spheres" is not at all like later Delerium releases - e.g. Semantic Spaces, Karma, Poem, etc., when they got more danceable and added the female vocalist(s). Those more dancey albums aren't my bag - I hate the vocals and the tame, predictable beats don't do much for me. Chances are, if you like those later albums a lot, you probably won't like this.

Early Delerium at their best,
By
This review is from: Spheres (Audio CD)
This is Delerium at its best. Ambient, sometimes dark beats fused with industrialised gregorian chants make this album a must for any hardcore Delerium fan. There are 6 tracks on the first volume all over 5 mins in lenth. It is a album that is probably meant for 100 years in the future. Leeb and Fulber got the mix right and the CD cover is perfect, the back showing our moon and the front Saturn and its splendid rings.
Any of these tracks would feature rightly so on any sci fic movie, they have a dark ambience about them. This album was released after Morpheus in 1994 and showed Delerium moving onwards from its early developement stage into its mature stage where the Spheres proves that with age the music of delerium is universal.

This is Delerium for those who are worried about buying something too structured. Excellent CD, but only for fans of ambient and ethereal...fans of Karma, Poem, and Chimera may be disappointed. But buy it anyway! Expand your horizons!

A real trip,

This spacey, trippy, album is excellent background music. I love to listen to it while I'm working and don't want to be distracted by lyrics. It's ambient, trance, and hypnotic - the sort of noise I sway rather than dance to. I especially love the little snippets of choral chant. It's all a bit creapy in a good way.

Trippy and beautiful,

This was the first album I heard with mighty Delerium, and probably the one that still has that special place in my heart. Whenever I pick it up and turn it on I instantly get in a better mood and get very relaxed (except for Turmoil, which, although I like it, gives me the creeps). The tracks that are a little extra for me are Transmitter (just keeps on ascending), Dark Matter and Cloud Barrier (the last two with that patented, trademark, unique Delerium sound). It is, however, pointless to pick any *best* song(s) since this is a thoroughly great record. No sun spots here.If you're into ambient, well, then you probably already own this album. Good for you! But if you don't, then what are you waiting for? Get it, turn it on and take a trip to Jupiter like you've never done before! It just might make you a better person.

This CD and its companion CD Spheres II are just plain nice listening and fantasy background music. This one is perfect for playing when you need to relax and stimulate your mind at the same time. In other words perfect for paperwork.
