In the fantasy-adventure Spice and Wolf (2008), Craft Lawrence, a young peddler in a realm that suggests Renaissance Europe, finds himself in a pagan ritual come true. For ages, the farmers of one region believed the wheat harvest was ensured by a powerful wolf-spirit who periodically appeared in the form of a beautiful woman. As he leaves the area, Lawrence discovers a naked girl with furry ears and a tail sleeping in his wagon. The girl declares she is Holo, the wise and powerful wolf. People no longer believe in her, so she wants to return to her home village of Yoitz in the far north. It's not clear why Lawrence devotes himself to Holo: she insults him, spends his money, and drinks excessively. But he apparently enjoys the role of doormat. Although he's supposed to be a capable trader who buys low and sells high, Lawrence's fortunes take a decided downturn when Holo joins him. The stories are very talky with only minimal action, and the filmmakers cut corners, reusing backgrounds and animation. The ending suggests a third season may be in the works: Lawrence and Holo are only slightly closer to their goal than they were at the beginning of the first season, and the myth of the "Moonhunting Bear" that destroyed Yoitz could be developed further. The humor runs to drinking and reverse-sexism gags, with Holo repeatedly declaring, "Men are fools!" Her ears and tail give the fan service nudity an unwholesome tone that suggests Spice and Wolf was designed for adolescent furries. (Rated TV 14: nudity, violence, alcohol use, risqué humor, potentially offensive religious imagery) --Charles Solomon

5.0 out of 5 stars Worst Editorial Review I have see for anime on Amazon January 18, 2013
Format:Blu-ray
I simply could not let the short sighted, narrow minded, and completely incorrect slander that is the editor description shy people away from this great title. To say this show is for "adolescent furries" is an insult to more people than I have time to write about here. The initial description is spot on until you get the part about the downturn Lawrence has in his business once he meets Holo. It is clear the editor only watched 2 episodes and decided he knew everything there was to know which is like a 3 year old telling you he understands how life works.

Spice and Wolf truly begins to take shape when Lawrence starts to further explore his unusual feels toward Holo as he doesn't believe here to be a Wolf Spirit. Through trial and tribulation the pair learn to trust, respect, and eventually care a great deal for one another while doing their best to reach Lawrence's dream while he is still young enough to enjoy it. There "fly by the seat of their pants" approach to business ends it both big reward, and often big consequences. It is an amazing character piece that relies on its character interaction and audience intelligence to tell a story for adults about life and the pursuit of dreams. This with the capricious Holo and overly focus Lawrence at the center as the learn life lessons from each other.....all with very very minimal fanservice in the beginning.

5.0 out of 5 stars An anime that succeeds on multiple fronts September 24, 2012
By Auronic
Format:Blu-ray|Verified Purchase
Spice and Wolf has been around for a few years and it has always been one of my favorites. The story does an interesting job or mixing romance, economics, and "medieval" themes. The setting is a very rudimentary world focusing on the travels of a merchant named Lawrence. Originally continuing on a routine travel route, he forms a partnership with Holo, a wolf goddess that has taken human form with a desire to return to her ancient home. It's important to keep the setting in mind when you watch the show or some of the subtleties will be lost on you. This show does not make an attempt to beat you over the head with the finer details, but its considerably more complex than your typical slice of life high school romance.

Subplots within the show include: politics and corruption influenced by religion, monarchical interference in commerce, economics, greed, betrayal, and romance to name a few. If it sounds like the author is putting too much on his plate you might be right. However, please be assured that its all very well written and the story is simply wonderful. The economics are explained, even if in the situations they occur are overly simplistic or convenient. You have to remember, this story takes place in a time before the existence of "super economic world power" and a globalized economy. It is easier to understand and much more fascinating. Cause and Effect of the characters is easily understood and the impact of their decisions are more readily available for the viewer to witness and understand.

The series follows a mild "episodic" pace as the characters branch from story to story. I don't want to give the impression that its poorly written or jumpy. This is not the case at all.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic but an Aquired Taste March 11, 2013
Format:DVD
I would point out, firstly, that this anime has, by far, one of the best romantic plot lines I have seen in a series for quite a long while. The main characters feel very real, like they are actual people, and considering the type cast saturation we see in anime that is all to common, it is nice to see them work with characters that feel real. The female, especially, the Wolf God, doesn't feel as hackneyed as females often tend to get in these series. The voice acting on the dub is actually above average, the character not overly powerful but not overly "girly" either (that is, the creator didn't feel the need to make her go all weak and powerless when near the main character - she remains strong and willful consistently, which is a nice change of pace from the misogynistic, eye rolling strong-woman-turns-housewife shtick that is all too common in Japanese media).

The bad is substantial, but not bad in my opinion, just generally. You don't know me, the reviewer, so simply rating what I would give this (five stars) would be unfair. I love number crunching, I love economics, and I love Frank Hebert's Dune - political intrigue, double crosses, and trade banter are things I take pleasure in, but not many do. Many find such things boring, and if you are like most then let me stress this now: this series follows the adventures of a Merchant. And this isn't some goofy anime merchant with special powers, or a robot powered by gold, or the ability to see ghosts. No, he is just an ordinary merchant.

At one point there is a twelve minute scene where they discuss the differences in exchange rates for surrounding kingdoms and how coinage works in the setting.

This is a great show. While it is can be very slow paced, it has great characters, and a great and original story.

Well Written, well acted and surprisingly complex in it's interaction with Holo and Lawrence. I have seen it so it is going in my library but I shall enjoy it in a couple of years
