I'd always regretted that my reading time with my sons was limited to a bedtime story, as a working mom with so many other things on my plate. I've really relished having the opportunity to babysit my grandson from birth, and the additional time I've had to devote toward developing his interest in reading! He was a month shy of 4 years old when he showed strong signs of being ready to start reading on his own (with a little help), and I was excited to find just the thing - given his preoccupation with all-things-Spider-Man - a nifty box of little 12 page I Can Read Spider-Man Phonics books! He quickly mastered them and enthusiastically moved on to the Level 2 books. The 32 page format of this colorful book was ideal - long enough to cover a more complex story line than the Phonics books, but not so long or involved that it frustrated his attempts. The large print and wide spacing, along with the still mostly simple text (more challenging words tossed in here and there), and longer sentence length was terrific. The book centers around Peter Parker (Spider-Man), his not-so-nice classmate Flash Thompson, and a new villain named Electro who can control the power of electricity... until Spidey turns on some water and he fizzles out! (The book DOES include Spider-Man cautioning, "Everyone knows mixing water and electricity is very dangerous!", and again at the end, "Kids, don't try this at home!")

If you're interested, the other books I was able to find in this series were "Spider-Man versus The Lizard", "Spider-Man versus The Green Goblin", "Spider-Man versus The Vulture", "Spider-Man versus The Scorpion", "Spider-Man versus Hydro-Man", "Spider-Man versus Venom", and "Spider-Man versus Kraven". These books did wonders in increasing my grandson's confidence in - and desire to improve - his reading!

My kid loves to read and enjoys her new spider man books. They seem great for beginners. She just turned 5 and can read so this helps keep her reading.
