The main problem with Dan Slott's "Ends of the Earth" story arc of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN is not that it's poorly-written or the art isn't good or that the ideas aren't good. The negativity that I've been reading or seeing in other reviews of the separate issues have been the classic argument of Expectation Versus Reality. This was supposed to be the grand "event" comic for Spidey's 50th anniversary. It was supposed to be the super-duper status-quo-shaking no-holds-barred event for this major achievement. It was Spider-Man vs his most classic villains, The Sinister Six, and it's Dan Slott writing. This was supposed to achieve the same kind of acclaim and somewhat epic sweep that Slott provided us with a year ago with the brilliant "Spider-Island" arc.

Sadly, it does not achieve the glory that we, as the audience and as fans of Spidey, were expecting.

Does this make it a bad read, though? Absolutely not.

Plot-wise, the catalyst for this event is that Doctor Octopus is dying. He wants to assemble many of his old cohorts from the Sinister Six (Mysterio, Rhino, The Chameleon, Sandman and Electro) so that they may pull off what would appear to be the greatest con in history, but in fact is the reality of the destruction of all life on Earth. Doc Ock has launched satellites into space that will allow him to either super-heat OR repair the damage that the Ozone Layer has been subjected to due to global warming. The world's scientists get to work on this, and find that Ock's science is correct; one of Spidey's greatest villains can save the world from The Greenhouse Effect.

Anyone who has been reading Amazing Spider-Man for the past year or so knows that Doctor Octopus and his revived Sinister Six have been quite busy working on the Doc's latest plan. The Sinister Six - led by a dying Otto Octavius - have been cooking up their ultimate scheme for quite some time, and this has been shown in small snippets in the background of stories throughout the year. Now, all those story seeds are coming to fruition, and it's a real treat for the readers to see just what writer Dan Slott has been building towards.

I have to say, this is the best Spider-Man story I've read in probably the past five years! Slott has been doing a really nice job on this title ever since he took the reins, and it's just really satisfying to see him bring this story (and era) to a close in such an outstanding manner. Slott has carefully laid down plot threads, foreshadowed troubles, and built up the suspense that leads to this climax, and the way he ties everything up so neatly is so much better than say... what's been going on in concurrently running issues of Grant Morrison's Batman titles.

Think Peter's faced some unfathomable odds in the past? Wait till you see what he's up against, here!

This book was enjoyable, but not worth buying unless you're looking to complete The Amazing Spider-Man series. I suggest borrowing it from a friend or library, or reading a review online.

The art in this book is top notch, and alone that deserves five stars. Compared to most other Spidey writers after Brand New Day, Dan Slott is my favorite by far. This book kind of drags a bit with the tie-in Ends of Earth mini, but the rest is excellent. The setup for this epic starts way back, and the previous trade: Spider-Man: Trouble on the Horizon leads right into this, but when read alone, the story still works. This is one of my favorites as of late.

Doc Ock has been around since ASM # 3 way back in 1963. He's aged, and is now partially blind and battling cancer. He knows that he is close to death, and has found a way to scratch his name on the sidewalk. This impacts Peter in multiple ways, and also shows how vulnerable he is.

Oh and the suit? One of my absolute favorites. Lots of cool tech. It also shows that Peter isn't only one of the greatest superhero; he is also an amazing scientist.

Sorry for the uninventive title, but oh well. This is more or less a golden age James bond plot with Spiderman and company. so doc octopus claims he can save the world, and everyone but Spiderman believes him. the author tries to keep you guessing as to whether or not Otto is sincere about this desire, but of course spider has to be right since its his book. I would have liked it better if Otto had been truthful and spider man wAs wrong. as it is this book was uninteresting to me, as of course the world would be saved and Peter proven correct. the art is good, but there was an annoying tendency to have sable and widow look like Twins but with different colored hair and skin tight ass showing outfits. if they were both off page I doubt they could be told apart via dialogue alone. I also grew to dislike the scientist team that kept popping in for what I am assuming was intended as comic relief. if you want a good Otto story, I would recommend superior Spiderman instead of this. Ends of the Earth isn't the worst thing I have ever read, it's just not memorable or particularly clever in my humble opinion.
