This review is from: Spider-Man / Red Sonja (Spider-Man Graphic Novels (Marvel Paperback)) (Paperback)
It all started wih a marvel team-up issue that was thankfully reproduced as a back-up feature in this volume. In it, the evil sorcerer Kulin Gath from the age of Conan the Barbarian takes over the body of a museum guard and returns. Similarly the spirit of Red Sonya returns through the body of (then) Mary Jane Watson, Spider-man's love. It's a good story by Chris Claremont. An even better one came years later when Kulin Gath returns and turns, not just the inside of the museum, but all of New York into a version of the ancient world. That was X-MEN (vol.1) issues 189 and 190.
You want a terrific story? Read that. I was hoping for more of the same with this one but didn't get it. Basically, this author is no Chris Claremont! Worse, he seems to be deliberately writing for a juvenile audience. I guess I might've expected that, inasmuch as this story comes to us from Dynamite, which I think is the same company that used to make the children's magazine of the same name. Kulin Gath merging with Venom -- thereby become "Kulin Venom", I think it was -- was interesting as a concept, at least, but wasn't handled well. The best thing about this TBP is the reprint of the Claremeont's original. Skip this one, and get the X-men story. Or, if you have money, time and a comics-scholarly inclination, read them both, and see how the story really should be written. |
