This review is from: Spider-Man: With Great Power... (Amazing Spider-Man) (Hardcover)
Spider-Man: With Great Power... takes us back to the days of Peter Parker at Midtown High. David Lapham does a short re-telling of the origin of Spider-Man, but the main focus of this story is the dynamic of how Peter deals with his life of fame as Spider-Man and his responsibility to the people as a super hero. Peter initially lets the fame of Spider-Man get to him and he feels above everyone else and that people should cater to him. Through a series of events that includes being labeled as a menace by Jonah Jameson and a harrowing encounter of a Fantastic Four battle while out with Liz Allen and his Uncle Ben, Peter learns and understands his responsibility to help people in need of his help.
I have been reading Spider-Man comics and trades for 15 years and for those of you who have been Spider-Man fans for a long time and may think "oh great, another rehash of his origin and Peter dealing with the great power and responsibility cliche," this story is much better than that. Lapham uses the second person narrative, giving the story and added touch to the already beautiful story telling he is capable of. Harris' artwork is well done and up to his standards for anyone familiar with his work. I highly recommend this book to all groups of Spider-Man fans. |
