5.0 out of 5 stars Despite a New Look, Mary Jane Remains as Charming as Ever, August 4, 2009

This review is from: Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane: Sophomore Jinx (Marvel Premiere Editions) (v. 1) (Hardcover)
Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane began as a set of two mini-series (Mary Jane and Mary Jane: Homecoming) that focused on the sometimes turbulent high school life of a young Mary Jane Watson. Sean McKeever and Takeshi Miyazawa were the series' respective author and artist, and together they created a genuine and sympathetic portrayal of Mary Jane who had yet to fully discover herself or understand her place in the world around her. This new take on the character proved popular with the fans and the series soon became a regular monthly comic. After its twenty issue run, Marvel announced that the series would continue under writer Terry Moore (of Runaways fame) and artist Craig Rousseau, and Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane: Sophomore Jinx was born.

The question on any fan's mind, of course, is whether this continuation lives up to the earlier material. Indeed, Miyazawa's cute manga-style character designs are gone, and the new story does not seem to synch up perfectly with the characters and events from the original run, making it almost feel like an alternate continuity.

Nevertheless, Moore still takes command of the characters and weaves an enjoyable tale. Mary Jane, still recovering from some unfortunate events from the year before, finds herself faced with a new slew of troubles at the beginning of her sophomore year, from holding down a job to uncovering the culprit behind a website dedicated to trashing her well-respected name. Peter Parker is also back as the good friend who always seems to disappear inexplicably at the most inopportune times. And the art, while not as immediately appealing as its predecessor's, fits the story well and boasts its own charms.

In other words, Sophomore Jinx is a worthy addition to the Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane legacy. Perhaps the only real tragedy is that this volume may mark the true end of the series despite leaving some unresolved plotlines behind. But for while it lasts, this book is another gem.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Character Driven Story in the Spider-Man Universe, May 27, 2010

This review is from: Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane: Sophomore Jinx (Marvel Premiere Editions) (v. 1) (Hardcover)
I am a longtime Spider-Man fan. I heard great things about author Terry Moore and I decided to check this book out because the covers looked cool. I was happy to try this book out. It is very different to the normal Spider-Man series, as this focuses on Mary Jane's life in high school. Hence there are no supervillains and it is mostly about a young girl going through her first years in high school.

I think the story was pretty good, not many interesting things happen, but the writer and artist do a good job of making us care for Mary Jane. She goes through some trivial issues (not trivial for a teenager though) and she does it with grace.

I think this is a pretty good comic for teenagers. I am glad I read it.
