The '99 Spider-Man restart continues, and my mixed feelings continue as well.

I find this series to be fascinating, and that's not meant to be a good or a bad thing. It was highly criticized when it was first released, and it still gets blasted today. I guess that's partly what feeds this fascination.

My Pros & Cons here...

Interesting Byrne visuals. As a bit of an art enthusiast, I like paying attention to little details. There are at least 3 special aspects to Byrne's visuals here. The 1st is his extensive use of diagonal lines in his panel shapes; the 2nd is his occasional use of inverted backgrounds in cityscape action scenes; and the 3rd is Scott Hanna's stylistic inking. In regards to the 1st: Byrne goes absolutely *crazy* with diagonals and panels of all shapes & sizes; sometimes in grid, sometimes in full-bleed. In short: total compositional freedom. This is really interesting to me, but the result is something like a bit of visual chaos. Every single page is hit & miss for me in regards to my interest in the craziness of the compositions. Overall, I think I prefer the visual stability of the traditional grid, with occasional departures for dramatic effect. In any case, these radical & frenetic page compositions are decidedly different in comparison to Byrne's earlier work with this character, and Byrne fans may be interested in seeing this aspect for themselves. The 2nd special aspect is also kind of crazy: Byrne depicts Spider-Man swinging over the city right-side up, yet the city pictured behind him is upside-down. This gives me a bit of a vertigo-like feeling, which is kind of interesting, at least as a visual change of pace. The 3rd special aspect is Scott Hanna's inking: he brings a bit of a Jim Lee and J.
