I would have to say, I was disappointed by the reviews that I have read thus far. Yes, there are one or two lapses during the course of the plot, but a reader does not live by plot alone. The pace of the book, the character interplay and dialog make this one of the more enjoyable novels I have read in recent memory. While it has a very menacing theme, no small amount of violence, and some players right out of "Deliverance", the page by page flow of the conversations and interplay between the main characters (including Frick & Frack) is clever and witty, with a sometimes laugh out loud dry humor through most of the book, except where it is obviously not appropriate. A serious, yet well drawn and extremely readable piece of work. I would give it 4 1/2 stars, but your 1/2 button doesn't seem to be working.

Unusual plot,

I have purchased all the books this author has published. Each one possesses an interesting plot, taunt action, exciting pace and is well-written. This one involves some of the most sinister villains yet. You have it all: corrupt political figures, dishonest cops, violent rednecks, horrible deaths, pursuit by bloodthirsty huge dogs, drugs, white slavery, sale of little children, evil foreigners, retarded offspring, Western North Carolina Mountain setting, a powerful matriarch, and likeable protagonists. My only quibble is the actions of the principal hero pretty unbelievable, thus the four stars. Still, it's a good read. I recommend it to any reader for a breathless adventure.

Spider Mountain Review,

This book revisits the Primary Character of Duterman's book, "Cat Dancers". It is a page turner, that I could not put down. The action is continuous and exciting from begininning to end. Buy it and ready it! Matter of fact, if you are not already a P.T. Deuterman fan, you will soon become one. Please read "Cat Dancers" first, just for the story. "Spider Mountain" can stand on it's own, but it just makes more sense if you have already read "Cat Dancers" ("Cat Dancers" is a super exciting and not stop action thriller too!) What more can I say? Get them both, they are great reads!

Stretches the Boundaries of Belief,
By K Montgomery (Indiana) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spider Mountain: A Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
The book has an excellent premise, and is told in an interesting setting. Cam Richter and Carrie Harper are likeable characters. Frick & Frack, Richter's dogs, as featured secondary characters, add uniqueness and humor to the story. The concept of a clan like the Creigh's controlling the law and the politics in a rural county probably has many real-life comparisons. All that aside, the book ultimately falls short in many areas. The plot essentially repeated itself over & over with a half dozen or more failed attempts by Richter & Harper to infiltrate the Creigh compound. After about the third or fourth failed attempt, the reader is left wondering why and how Richter, Harper, and the dogs are still alive. The book just never provides a good enough explanation as to why they are allowed to survive. Beyond the dogs, the secondary characters are under-developed. The author surrounds the plot with a heavy dose of governmental red tape, which is likely quite accurate. The 'surprise' at the end was not really a surprise at all and handled clumsily. Unveiled earlier in the story, I think the twist would have been more powerful and allowed the story to develop greater depth. In summary, I think the story relies too much on the shock value of the topic and falls short in other areas.

Very exciting sequel,

This sequel to "Cat Dancers" is a stand alone story but reading the first book would help understand the characters and some of the story line. That said, don't start this one unless you are prepared to dedicate some seriou time to finishing it. The action is constant, the dialogue crisp and the bad guys are really bad. The story takes place in the North Carolina mountains with Cam and his two German Shepards helping out a friend with an unusual assault case. From there things pretty much go downhill for Cam. There are a lot of interesing characters and plenty of action and hair raising adventure. Frick and Frack bring a lot to the story as Cam's friends and protectors. Mr. Deutermann is one of the best thriller/mystery writers around today. I suspect there will be a third novel in this series. Highly recommended.

This book I thoroughly enjoyed. This is the first protagonist (Cam Richter) that was brought back for a second story that Pete Deutermann has written. All the characters in the book are realistic people and even though creations of the author's imagination ring true as I've seen similar characters during my lifetime. The best thing to do with this book is to read the first one as well as this one to get the proper background, even though the 2nd story stands on its own merits!

A standoff with a local matriarch known to destroy people...,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spider Mountain (Cam Richter Series) (Audio CD)
P.T. Deutermann's SPIDER MOUNTAIN receives veteran Dick Hill's smooth, seamless narrative style which perfectly captures and matches the story of an ex-cop who pursues a vicious gang through the Smoky Mountain wilderness area. His journey will take him deep into Appalachia culture to a standoff with a local matriarch known to destroy people.

Not great literature, but fun,
By Arlee Bird (pico rivera, ca United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Spider Mountain: A Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
No point in going thru yet another synopsis of this book, but this is the first book by P.T. Deutermann that I have read and I did enjoy it. The story, setting, and style put me in mind of the Jefferson Bass "Body Farm" series. I found the plot and pacing to be engaging to the extent that I read through the book rather quickly without putting it down much--in other words, a page turner.Sure, it's pure escapist literature and would make a good summertime read. You probably won't really learn anything, so what else would you expect. Nobody will be studying this one in literature courses, but it would make a good action movie. |
