Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4-- Spider Kane is an insect detective extraordinaire. He has gathered a crew of followers under the "Order of the MOTH" (Mission: Only To Help). His lieutenants have been sent a letter summoning them to a secret meeting at the Jumbo Nightcrawler's jazz club on the waterfront. Events unfold rapidly. The golden treasure of the ants disappears, and Mimi Butterfly and La Mere Leafwing are kidnapped. Walter Dogtick and Leon Leafwing are frantic. At last, Spider Kane, intrepid veteran of the Mosquito Wars, appears to lead the remaining MOTH crew in a dangerous venture back to the waterfront. Villainous Saratoga D'Bee summons her henchmen, the sinister hornets, but in the end they prove no match for the keen wits of Spider Kane. Puns, quips, and imaginative language enliven this chapter book; clues to the mystery abound. This title follows Spider Kane and the Mystery under the May-Apple (Knopf, 1993), but it can stand alone .

From Kirkus Reviews

A sequel to Spider Kane and the Mystery Under the May-Apple (1992), set in the same cottage garden. Butterfly Leon Leafwing is a new lieutenant in the Order of the MOTH, a secret crime-fighting band led by Spider Kane--renowned detective, jazz musician, and master of disguise. Leon's mother, his girlfriend, and several veteran members of the Order have disappeared after being lured to the shadowy nightclub district on the banks of the garden creek. Meanwhile, a shipment of gold is missing and someone has been forging Kane's secret signature. Like Sherlock Holmes, Kane handily solves these related mysteries by using his powers of observation, ratiocination, and recall in a tightly plotted tale, well sprinkled with clues if without the sense of menace and the personal odyssey that distinguished the first adventure. Chess's usual wit and whimsy will be at work to illustrate Osborne's perfectly imagined insect world. (Fiction. 6-10) -- Copyright ©1993, Kirkus Associates, LP. This book was very good. It was very interesting. There was always a question in the beginning or middle of the book, but at the end all the questions are answered. My mom got it for me because I liked the Magic Treehouse books so much. I didn't think I was interested till my mother bought it for me but when I started reading it was great. The whole book is about bugs! Everyone in the book is a bug, except Spider Kane, who you can guess is a spider.

I thought this was going to be just another book that my mom and I would read for school but this turned out to be the best book I ever read sending me on a quest for any other spider Kane books. Spider Kane and his band of the MOTH are the coolest bugs ever tracking missing gold and going under cover to help other bugs. I loved the mystry! I loved the suspence I just loved this book. Spider Kane can do anything he is awesome. I wish there were more books to read about him. I couldn't put this book down we read it in 5 days then I lent it out to my friends. Then I read Under the May Apple Tree and I need more, my mom says Mary Pope Osborn is a genius because this is my summer vacation and I'm begging to read this series.

My 8 year old grandchild has gotten into reading the past year. It has really helped her in all phases of education. She has read all of the Magic Tree House series and loves them. She says the Spider Kane Mysteries may be the best ever.
