I just beat this game today after a long period of simply ignoring it. A game I bought in my childhood, it had remained untouched for some ten years now.
The problem with this game, as anyone will tell you, is its extreme difficulty. As a child, I couldn't even get through one stage past Spiderman's initiation level. But ultimately, I found this game to be a very fun piece, a rewarding experience, and a good exercise for almost all gaming skills. Memorization, quick reflexes, problem solving, and endurance are all required to beat this game. Therefore, in light of the complexity of it, I've decided to give it a full review as follows. Sound - 7/10: A lot of the game's songs could have easily become classics if this game had been able to go more mainstream. This game has 9 songs in total - 5 for the 5 characters and 4 other miscellaneous tunes. It's a simplistic scheme, but it does the job well for a platformer. Storm and Wolverine's arrangements aren't anything to write home about, but all the other music is well above average. Cyclops' theme in particular gives a chilling feeling of isolation like few video game songs can. The sound effects are also good, with the screams of the character's dying in particular being some of the most effective aural companions of death I've ever heard. Graphics - 8/10: The graphics in this game have aged well. The backgrounds are richly drawn and the comic book graphics of destruction, especially in Storm and Spiderman's stages, seem appropriate despite the seriousness of the game. The characters themselves are nothing incredible, but recognizable; the enemies are also, for the most part, well done. This game definitely makes good use of the Super Nintendo's graphical capabilities. Control - 6/10 - Each character seems to have their own different strengths and weaknesses as far as the control is concerned. Overall, the game is very playable, but there are some annoyances in this respect. Wolverine - 5/10 - Lithe on his feet, wolverine has good jumps and runs smoothly. The ease with which he sheathes and unsheathes his claws makes it seem all the more natural (and the fact that the gameplay is designed so that claws aren't always the best choice is very impressive). There are, however, big problems. In what I believe to be the hardest stretch of the game, you continually run from Juggernaut in Wolverine's second stage while dropping anvils and dodging all sorts of obstacles. The camera pans left and right and there's a short pause in the time frame of movement, making it difficult to turn effectively in this point. This adds more difficulty to an already difficult proposition. There are many unnecessary deaths at this point due to the finicky controls and changes in the game's camera. It is also difficult to jump from off of narrow spots all throughout wolverine's stages, making his jumps somewhat unreliable. Cyclops - 6/10: Cyclops can shoot his beams in six directions and kick and punch. His melee attacks are not very effective, both kick and punch being of the same length and hitting almost the same general collision box. Cyclops also runs well and jumps a little better than wolverine, but again there is a problem with turning. While shooting, turning is very difficult and this could cause some problems with gameplay. It's not a major problem, but there are some annoyances about it. Gambit - 7/10: Gambit runs and jumps smoothly, his card throwing also has a decent physics engine that, when learned, will make his attacks pretty reliable. There's a problem, however, getting through some barriers that might be destroyed as his crouch, jump, and 3 directional card throwing are sometimes insufficient to pass through an obstacle. This is difficult in Gambit's stages especially as time is of the essence, I died several times just trying to figure out how to hit a block that the control wouldn't allow me to hit. Storm - 8/10: At the very least, it can be said that Storm's control is unique in video game play. The fact that she has a walking and a swimming form also deserves praise. The swimming portion is, if I may freely say, easier to control than even the Super Mario swimming stage. However, attacks are a little unresponsive and easily get stopped by the backgrounds stuff. No complaints about the walking stage, it ranks up there with the best. Spiderman - 8/10: Spiderman is usually very easy to control and has a range of possibilities for movement. This is perhaps the only 2D game that faithfully captures his webslinging and crawling in an entertaining manner. Solely horizontal shooting ability, however, detract from the whole experience. If he'd had more range of attack motion, like all the other characters, it would have made his control less repetitive and would have garnered him a 10 for control in my book. Gameplay - 7/10: This is a fun game when all is said and done. The great difference in character styles also adds to this aspect. It tests all of a game player's ability to the fullest moreso than the great majority of other SNES games. It's a grueling 2 hour endurace match just to beat the game, as the Xmen have to be rescued in one sitting. Memorization is also key here as this game can only be won through trial and error - instant deaths for going the wrong way are not uncommon and there aren't often many different ways of doing things. Reflexes have to be quick and sharp for Wolverine and Gambit in particular. Difficulty - 5/5: This game is definitely one of the hardest "fair" games I've ever played. Although it has its fair share of instant death traps and control problems, this game would be very difficult even if it were a completely smooth ride. I couldn't beat even one stage when I first got it, and without some help I probably would have never beaten it. Replay Value - 6/10: This game has good replay value for what it is. Trying to get the hidden lives and points and seeing all of the instance death spots would be very entertaining, I imagine. However, I imagine it would be extremely frustrating every time. It's a difficult game. I give this game 7/10 or 4 stars. It's grueling, extremely frustrating, and has an unsatisfying ending. However, the game itself is a lot of fun and beating it is a reward in itself. It's not, however, for the faint of heart.

When I played this game I didn't think it sucked, and overall thought of it as an okay platformer. You play as Spiderman and the X-Men and your goal is to defeat some guy who's trying to take over the world and destroy them. The story is incoherent after that unfortunately. The graphics look great for a 2D game and the environments are wonderfully detailed. The character designs and enemy designs are great as well, and have a cartoony feel to them. The gameplay works fine most of the time, and really isn't a hassle. The flaws with this game are the sticky platforming obstacles which are difficult to figure out at times, the story sucks, the enemies are hard to kill sometimes when something is blocks them and the missions feel a little dull and repetitive. I didn't have a bad time playing this game, but it all depends; How much do you like Spiderman and the X-Men to buy this game or play it?

This game is so hard i can't even get past Gambit's level even if my life depended on it, but the best part of this game is that you get to play Spider-Man and three X-men Characters, Like Cyclops, Gambit & Storm. This is one of the fewest game that you get to play Gambit in. This is an okay game, But if you like really hard games this one is for you.
If you liked this game then check out all of the spider-man games.

This is takes horrible to a new level! On a 1-5 scale I give it a -9999999. The graphics are bad, spiderman's and everyone else's moves are limited, the sound effects are....(lets not even go there) and the game is EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. You would get frustrated, you would be ripping your hair out......... basically your life will get miserable. You will keep loosing no matter how hard you try. Even if you use a game genie. WHO THE HELL DESIGNED THIS VIDEO GAME? I WOULD LOVE TO KNOCK THEM OUT!!!!!!!!!

Spidey's new adventure on the S-NES was a very good gamewith an exciting plot and they remebered his Spidey sense too! But the X-Men were a bad touch. It could had been more exciting by taking them out and putting in Venom, Doc Ock, Carnage,The Lizard, The Green Goblin, Scream, and Shocker.
