Good guide for enthusiasts,

This review is from: Spiders of the Eastern United States: A Photographic Guide (Paperback)
As a photographer, I not only have to get the photo, I also have to correctly ID the animal. This book was recommended to me, and I have not been disappointed.
I have been able to get to the genus level for nearly all of the animals, and often the species as well. Living as I do in the foothills, I get a mixed lot of subjects, some eastern, some mountain, some western in range. Photos are good with additional drawings that help with ID. One thing that would help is larger and more numerous drawings of key ID points. If you want to know in good detail what that eight legged animal is for business or just because, I think you'll find this book helpful.

I was hoping for a more inclusive guide book. I know many spiders are difficult to identify without a microscope so I wasn't expecting every species to be in the book however I was expecting all the genera to be there. I'm a beginner with spiders but I can usually figure out the family (especially the easy ones- like jumping spiders). I found a jumper yesterday with a very distinctive pattern to him and nothing was even remotely similar in the book. He turned out to be in the genus Tutelina- I had to go looking online to figure that out. Also missing is the zebra jumping spider, one of the most common, easily reccognizable spiders out there. It's almost like if a bird guide didn't include robins.Spiders of the Eastern United States: A Photographic Guide
The pictures that are included are good, the descriptions are good. I do wish the pictures were across from the descriptions and not on the next page. For a 30$ book I was expecting more.

This is, by far, the best spider identification book i've used. It covers a much wider variety of spiders than most field guides, and gives much more information. It's not really a field guide, so if that's what your looking for you won't find it here, but if you would actually like to identify the spider that has taken up residence in your bathtub this id the book to go with.
