Book Description

January 22, 2008 8 and up3 and upMelendy Quartet
Randy and Oliver Melendy awake one fall morning full of gloom. Their brother and sister are away, the house seems forlorn and empty, and even Cuffy, their adored housekeeper, can't pick up their spirits. Will they have to face a long and lonely winter? But a surprise message in the mailbox starts a trail of excitement and adventure that takes them through the cold season. When summer finally comes around again, the children have found fourteen messages in all, and the end of the search brings them a rich reward.

Full of unforgettable moments (like finding a secret note tucked under the dog's collar) and delightful twists of language (the more challenging clues, the better), this fourth book in Elizabeth Enright's Melendy Quartet makes for a grand finale to an equally grand collection of stories. Spiderweb for Two is the fourth and final installment of Enright's Melendy Quartet, an engaging and warm series about the close-knit Melendy family and their surprising adventures

Review

"The Melendys are the quintessential storybook family...[their] ardent approach to living is eternally relevant." -- Publishers Weekly

About the Author

Elizabeth Enright (1909-1968) was born in Oak Park, Illinois, but spent most of her life in or near New York City. Her mother was a magazine illustrator, while her father was a political cartoonist. Illustration was Enright's original career choice and she studied art in Greenwich, Connecticut; Paris, France; and the Parson's School of Design in New York City. After creating her first book in 1937, she developed a taste, and quickly demonstrated a talent, for writing.

Throughout her life, she won many awards, including the 1939 John Newbery Medal for Thimble Summer and a 1958 Newbery Honor for Gone-Away Lake. Among her other beloved titles are her books about the Melendy family, starting with The Saturdays, published in 1941. Enright also wrote short stories for adults, and her work was published in The New Yorker, The Ladies Home Journal, Cosmopolitan, The Yale Review, Harper’s, and The Saturday Evening Post. She taught creative writing at Barnard College. Translated into many languages throughout the world, Elizabeth Enright's stories are for both the young and the young at heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful middle-reader series, April 22, 2008
By
This review is from: Spiderweb for Two: A Melendy Maze (Melendy Quartet) (Paperback)
Spiderweb for Two is the last of the four books in the Melendy series written by Elizabeth Enright. Although the book is set during WWII, it was actually written about ten years after the third book and the war isn't mentioned.

It's 1944 and Mona, Rush and Mark are at boarding school. Randy and Oliver are home without their siblings and aren't happy about the prospect of the school year without them. Things look pretty bleak until a letter addressed to Miss Miranda Melendy and Master Oliver Melendy arrives. It was postmarked from New York, but the children have no idea who it is from. Inside is a poem containing the first clue in what becomes a year-long treasure hunt. Randy and Oliver enjoy the adventures as they try to solve the clues that lead them into the following summer and a big surprise.

Who is the author of the clues? Is the author the same person sending them? The answers to these questions are as much fun as the treasure hunt itself.

I enjoyed this book, but missed the rest of the Melendy family. It felt a little lonely and sad without the entire crew (except over the holidays). But most of all, I realized after I turned the last page, that this was the last of the Melendy series. I mourned the loss of the wonderful family I've loved throughout their adventures.

Armchair Interviews says: The Melendy family series is a must read. They will warm your hearts and put a smile on your face.

4.0 out of 5 stars citygirl, April 26, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Spiderweb for Two: A Melendy Maze (Melendy Quartet) (Paperback)
I recently purchased all of the books of the Melendy Quartet for my 9 year old daughter. She loved them and enjoyed the storyline of the four siblings. I was worried these might be a little old fashioned and might not keep her interest, but was really pleased when she enjoyed them so much. It's hard to keep finding interesting books for my young reader that do not include being disrespectful to others or are too mature for her comprehension level. As a third grader, she already has a reading level beyond a junior high school student, but finding stories that still challenge her and don't frighten her is hard. These books were wonderful.

5.0 out of 5 stars My daughter's favorite of the Melendy books!, December 15, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Spiderweb for Two: A Melendy Maze (Melendy Quartet) (Paperback)
My daughter loves all four of the Melendy books. She first read them when she was 7, but still loves them at 9. The family is interesting, funny, and cooperative. But in this book, the focus in on the 2 youngest Melendy children and a "mystery" they solve. The mystery is more of a series of gentle puzzles; there is no sense of danger whatsoever. It is just a lovely, classic children's book, which is a welcome respite from the modern world's all-too-real problems for children.
