But boy, do they break easily. They're really wonderful glasses. The shape is perfect for highlighting the flavor of the wine. However, within the first few months, I had inadvertently broken about half the glasses in the set. Still...at this price, you can almost afford to break them. Just forget about putting them in the dishwasher, and handle them gingerly...

Being a wine connoisseur for years, until now I've used Riedel glasses. Though Riedel makes a great glass, they are also very fragile. Recently I decided to save money and try Spiegelau. I have to say that Spiegelau looks just as good as Riedel, yet costs up to 50% less. Also, it is a slightly more durable glass (though I would not recommend putting them in the dishwasher). In fact, my friends who are used to me serving wines in Riedels have yet to notice a difference.

When it comes down to it, unless you just have to have Riedels just so you can say "why yes, this is a Riedel glass" to your friends (in which you are simply feeding your ego), fine. Also, if money is of no object I'd recommend going with Riedel as well. Other than that, I can't see a reason why anyone would pay the extra money for essentially the same glass. As for the Spiegelau glass itself, it is perfectly sized and beautifully tapered at the top, thus allowing you to swirl your glass without fear of spilling, yet still able to enjoy the aromas as well. It really does enhance the wine compared to the average glass.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value, lovely glasses, September 26, 2002

I bought these glasses because they were a great deal, but once they arrived, I was pleasantly surprised by their excellent quality and their beauty. These Spiegelau Authentis White Wine Glasses have the heft of the Riedel glasses. They feel great in the hand and they make that nice ringing sound of crystal when you toast. The tapered shape does seem to help with the nose of the wine (follow the instructions and only pour wine to the widest part of the glass), and if nothing else, they make you look good at a dinner party. And the best part of all? They seem quite happy to run through the dishwasher, which is great, because washing wineglasses by hand always scares me. After spending three months using both the red and the white Spiegelau glasses, I ordered another set of each, and I'm giving my old Bormiolis away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, wine glasses make a difference, October 18, 2002
This review is from: Spiegelau Authentis Collection White Wine Glasses, Set of 6 (Kitchen)
I bought a set of the white and red Spiegelau Wine glasses on the recommendation of an article. They are said to be no different in quality from the Riedel but are typically less expensive. The absence of a rim focuses the wine on the more sensitive front part of your tongue, and the shape of the glass focusing the bouquet of the wine, both serve to really enhance your perception of the wine. Even Robert Mondavi, widely considered one of the greatest winemakers of all time, was surprised the first time he tasted a Mondavi wine from a glass like this, exclaiming "I never dreamed my wines were this good!"

I don't know about putting these in the dishwasher-I wouldn't risk it, but the manufacturer says it's fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great glasses for the price!, August 3, 2003

These are great glasses for the price. We have been using tasting glasses from wineries as our main stock so it was time to upgrade. These made a huge difference with the ease of swirling the wine and releasing the taste. Plus these are large glasses, no need for as many refills.

Now we just use our winery glasses for parties. :)

Riedel is the 'gold standard' of wine glasses but these glasses nearly (no not quite) but nearly measure up to them at a much lower cost. I enjoy this glass because I can use it for both white and red wines. I don't know about others, but my cabinet space is limited, and I cannot have a number of different wine glasses. There just isn't space. I strongly recommend cleaning these is the dishwasher. The only breakage I have had occurred cleaning up after a neighborhood get together and one broke while a friend was hand drying it. To fully appreciate these, remember to fill them only to the 'break', the point where the glass starts to turn back in. If you fill them above this you will not be able to properly swirl the wine or enjoy its nose. Buy these and enjoy both them and your wine!

My wife is the wine drinker in the house, and she tells me she is very happy with these glasses. They are stylish and are made of a good-quality glass. They clean up beautifully in the dishwasher, by the way, a hugh plus for us. I can recommend these without hesitation.

5.0 out of 5 stars drop this business line, October 7, 2005
This review is from: Spiegelau Authentis Collection White Wine Glasses, Set of 6 (Kitchen)
Product is great. This was to be my second shipment of glasses from Amazon. Trouble, as noted in other reviews, is that Amazon seems unable to ship wine glasses without breaking them. First order last year had 1 broken out of 18 so I kept them; you have to return entire package to Amazon if one broken. This order has 2 broken out of 6 and Amazon could not fill order due to product shortage. Amazon packages glasses as if they are books. Amazon needs to get act together or get out of this line of business.

I ordered these to round out my wine glasses. I also own the Spiegelau Burgundy, Bordeaux, and Red Wine glasses in the Authentis Collection. The only fault I have found with these glasses is that the mouth of the glass may be a little small for some people. But, on the plus side for the small size of the opening, it really does intensify the aroma of the wine. The shape is also very good for swirling. I highly recomend these to any one looking for value in a wine glass. I have used other brands, but I bought these.

These glsses are wonderful. Wonderful price, wonderful look make wonderful wine better. I would likethem to be sturdier, my bird tapped the top stem with her beek and one of the glasses broke. No, she was not having her own glass of Reisling. Since they are fragile, so I would recommend wshing by hand rather than in the dishwasher, even though they claim the glasses are dishwasher safe. I will be buying another set, 6 are not enough.
