This Level 3 book is perfect for children who can read alone.

In Spies, readers explore the history of espionage through war and "cold war" peace. Meet the famous and the infamous, the agents and the double agents. Infiltrate the FBI, CIA, and KGB and follow the evolution of the tools of the trade, including industrial spying and computer hackers. The 48-page Level 3 books, designed for children who can read on their own, contain more complex sentence structure and more detail. Young readers will devour these kid-friendly titles, which cover high-interest topics such as sharks, and the Bermuda Triangle, as well as classics like Aladdin. Information boxes highlight historical references, trivia, pronunciation, and other facts about words and names mentioned. Averaging 2,400 to 2,800 words, these books offer a 50/50 picture-to-text ratio.

The Dorling Kindersley Readers combine an enticing visual layout with high-interest, easy-to-read stories to captivate and delight young bookworms who are just getting started. Written by leading children's authors and compiled in consultation with literacy experts, these engaging books build reader confidence along with a lifelong appreciation for nonfiction, classic stories, and biographies. 1.0 out of 5 stars Age Appropriate?, February 12, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Spies! (DK Readers, Level 3: Reading Alone) (Paperback)
In reading through this book, I was greatly dismayed to see the graphic depictions of killing. Yes, we know that spies are often forced to do unsavory things. However, when writing for such a young audience, authors typically don't address them quite so vividly. As a former DK distributor, I was greatly disappointed to receive a book of such questionable content for my 8-year-old. I would recommend almost any other DK Reader, sight unseen, above this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible for children!!, September 23, 2011

This review is from: Spies! (DK Readers, Level 3: Reading Alone) (Paperback)
After watching "The Spy Next Door," my son has been fascinated with spies. I thought with this being a childrens book on spies that he would love it. When it came in, I was excited to give it to him, until I read it. Parts of the book are somewhat interesting while other parts are violent and describe violent acts and personally, I'm stumped on why this was even a book directed towards children. If I had known this prior to ordering, I would have NEVER bought it. Needless to say, my son WILL NOT be getting this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not appropriate!!, June 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Spies! (DK Readers, Level 3: Reading Alone) (Paperback)
I was greatly disappointed in this book. My 6 year old loves nonfiction books and I wanted to get him a book that would encourage him to read on his own and thought this would be a great one b/c it discusses spies. Well I should have read the reviews before purchasing. I never thought that a leveled reader for kids would discuss killings. I love the DK readers but I DO NOT recommend this book.
