5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting
My daughter was very interested in Spies for a while. She asked a lot of questions about how they work, why they spy, and do they kill people. This book is an easy to read book yet it covers a lot of basic information about spies. It fueled her interest and encouraged her creative play for several weeks. She has sense moved on in different interests but this was an...

1.0 out of 5 stars Age Appropriate?
In reading through this book, I was greatly dismayed to see the graphic depictions of killing. Yes, we know that spies are often forced to do unsavory things. However, when writing for such a young audience, authors typically don't address them quite so vividly. In reading through this book, I was greatly dismayed to see the graphic depictions of killing. Yes, we know that spies are often forced to do unsavory things. However, when writing for such a young audience, authors typically don't address them quite so vividly. As a former DK distributor, I was greatly disappointed to receive a book of such questionable content for my 8-year-old. I would recommend almost any other DK Reader, sight unseen, above this one.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible for children!!, September 23, 2011

After watching "The Spy Next Door," my son has been fascinated with spies. I thought with this being a childrens book on spies that he would love it. When it came in, I was excited to give it to him, until I read it. Parts of the book are somewhat interesting while other parts are violent and describe violent acts and personally, I'm stumped on why this was even a book directed towards children. If I had known this prior to ordering, I would have NEVER bought it. Needless to say, my son WILL NOT be getting this book.

I was greatly disappointed in this book. My 6 year old loves nonfiction books and I wanted to get him a book that would encourage him to read on his own and thought this would be a great one b/c it discusses spies. Well I should have read the reviews before purchasing. I never thought that a leveled reader for kids would discuss killings. I love the DK readers but I DO NOT recommend this book.

This review is from: Spies! (DK Readers, Level 3: Reading Alone) (Paperback)
The author of this book is Richard Platt. This book is a very good book. Spies try to copy its rivals country planes.Spies spy for many different reasons. Some spies because they been blackmailed. Spies have always had to work in secret. They write important messages in a code.Codes turn messsages into a jumble of letters that look like nonsense-hiding the original meaning.Only the sender and the receiver knows how to read the secret code. The deadliest killers of all were the 12-century Japanese spies known as Ninja"invisible men."Spies at wartime must make sure nobody suspects them.Unlike a regular soldier, spies have to live, dress, and talk like the enemy they are fighting. After I read this book,I know a lot of things about spies. I would recommend this book to all third graders. I wish you like it.
