Book Description

10 and up5 and up

An illustrated guide to the deadly world of espionage.

Agents, double agents and multiple agents are vital to waging war successfully and they often help nations avoid war altogether. Spies have affected the outcomes of wars and crucial battles throughout history.

Spies exposes the secret successes and public failures of intelligence gathering and operations from ancient times to the current war on terrorism.

Using easy-to-follow illustrated case studies and sidebar features, Spies reveals the behind-the-scenes stories of famous spies, international secrets, betrayals and bravery in the long history of spying.

The book describes in exciting detail:

  • The art of spy tradecraft
  • Techniques spies use to gather and send secrets
  • Devices used to steal state secrets
  • How agents survive in hostile environments
  • Whether or not spies like James Bond really exist.

Today, sophisticated digital and space-based technology gathers untold amounts of raw data. Yet far from rendering the spy on the ground obsolete, human intelligence is more vital than ever to separate the truth from the deception.

Spies is a factual and fascinating look into a dangerous world where nothing is what it appears to be.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up–Owen delves in to the real world of espionage and double agents. More than 20 case studies demonstrate the effect spying has had since 1940, concentrating on World War II but also mentioning the 1990 Gulf War and spying attempts on Osama bin Laden through 2001. Color and black-and-white photos appear on every page, showing the figures and events that highlight the ever-changing world of spies. This is a slick, colorful book, similar in format to Owen's Hidden Evidence (Firefly, 2000). It has the look of a beginner's guide to this undercover world, but the writing assumes a better reader with some prior knowledge. Teens will find a great deal of intriguing information, along with wonderful photos. Social studies teachers will find a wealth of material to support their curriculums, as well.–Lynn Evarts, Sauk Prairie High School, Prairie du Sac, WI

From Booklist

Gr. 7-10. This slim volume's short chapters cover the history of espionage from its beginnings until the present day. Owen emphasizes events of the last century, giving more attention to the technological side of spying than to the gritty details of fieldwork. He also covers notorious cases and the most well-known pieces of equipment, such as the Ultra machines of World War II and the spy planes of the cold war era. The book suffers from jumbled organization, and readers may quibble with a few historical points, such as the assertion that the Reagan era arms buildup directly led to the fall of the Soviet Union. In addition, some of the accounts of famous events are so succinct that more background will be needed to understand the events. However, fans of the subject may enjoy browsing the brief accounts, which are peppered with a mix of color and black-and-white photographs. A short glossary concludes. Todd Morning
