I was a little wary of this book because I had never heard of it before, but I decided to give it a try. I had already lost weight (from 260 to 185), but was stuck in a rut and had actually started gaining my weight back.

Enter the 'Spike Diet'. This book takes out all the BS filler most diet books are stuffed with and gives you what you need to know. You can actually sit down, start reading, and get everything you need to know in one session. I've been interested in diet/fitness for years, and reading this book just flipped the "AHA!" switch in my head. I had previously implemented several of the strategies in the book during my journey to better health, but had never thought about how much synergy these ideas had until I started reading.

I wanted to wait at least 2 weeks of following the program exactly to give a review. In that time I've gone from a starting weight of 202 to 196. Six pounds may not seem like a lot to some people, but most sources recommend losing 1-2 pounds a week. If you're overweight, just imagine where you'd be if you lost one pound every week for a year. It's especially impressive to me since I was stuck on a serious plateau, and I lost weight while eating foods that are usually considered 'forbidden' for dieters. I like that this diet has a transition to maintenance, so that you keep your weight off. I also like that it doesn't go completely crazy.

Even though you're eating a lot of calories on the Spike Day, there is still a calorie goal. No diet that lets you eat ten pizzas a day will work, but because the 'limit' is so high you'll have a hard time hitting it. I had trouble getting in all my calories on the Spike Day because I was stuffed.

Totally agree with previous post. Quick read and gets right to the point, to get you onto losing weight! Also want to add the Spike Diet takes the pressure off of hardcore dieting without guilt. Making a diet change like this is one I can stick with! Thanks!

I found, after 6 months of steady weight loss, and then several months of doing the same things but not losing any more weight, that Spiking was right for me!

Other than very general guidelines, this is not the kind of 'diet' that lays out weird specific foods for you or puts an entire food group on the naughty list (although there are several recipes to get the ideas flowing). You can make your plan of whatever healthy foods you choose. That part's just common sense and good nutrition.

The magic is in the math: you do little bit to figure out where your calories should be for the various days of the week (you have three days at a lower rate, three days at a medium rate, and one ridiculously awesome day, your Spike Day, at a really high calorie limit. HIGH, really really high!); it's all laid out for you and is quite simple once you plug in your own info.

The idea is that overall your week is a deficit so you lose weight, while the Spike Day tells your body that there's no need to panic and lower your metabolism. I'm pretty sure that's what happened to me - I was at a lowered calorie limit for so long that it adjusted my metabolism to match. Hell no - not standing for that!

Although it wasn't really my issue, there's another cool aspect of this plan - people who have a hard time with feeling deprived on lower calories have that re-set switch on Spike Day. Anyone can do anything for six days at a time, right?! If you're really craving something that's considered not weight-loss friendly, you never have more than six days until you can indulge. It's crazy.

Since I got the book and put it into action, I've begun losing weight again at a healthy clip and I'm feeling good about it.

The Spike Diet is a good, fast read-perfect for people like me who don't like to waste time wading through pages and pages of "filler". It is to the point and easy to understand. It explains how the diet works by maximizing your metabolism and how to get past, even avoid, those plateaus. The best part for me, you can eat anything you want (anything! even pizza, ice cream, candy bars...) one day a week, every week! I could have a lot of fun with this! I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants an easy to follow diet that really works. It also includes quick and easy recipes and a lot of sample food logs to take the guesswork out of planning meals.

I was skeptical, but my friend urged me to try the Spike Diet claiming it was the magic behind her weight loss. I didn't understand how eating cookies and pizza would help me lose weight but I took her word on it, mostly because I could see her success.

The book was very quick and easy to read, and while some of the science went over my head, I was still able to get a firm grasp on metabolism and "starvation mode". It was starvation mode and depriving myself that was behind my past failed attempts at losing weight. My first Spike Day, I was kind of afraid to give in but once I started with waffles and a donut I was off to the races. I lost 3-4 pounds each and every week, and all of a sudden the Spike Diet started making sense. My energy levels were up, and I was feeling great, which has never happened before while I was on a diet. It was also great having Spike Day's during the Holiday season, so I could eat whatever I wanted on Thanksgiving, and I will be doing the same on Christmas.

I'm now only 15 pounds from my goal weight, and it has been a rather easy ride to get where I am now, so I am certain I will hit my goal weight soon after New Year's, when most people are just starting their weight-loss resolutions.
I highly recommend this book!
