I purchased this set of four paint cups after being dissatisfied with a set of 10 paint cups made by Chenille Kraft. While the Melissa and Doug paint cups are more expensive (1.88 vs. 1.12 each)they are also much higher quality. Pros: - screw on lid will not pop off - cap makes airtight seal that keeps paint from drying out! - slightly larger volume Cons: - more expensive than competitors I was very unsatisfied with the design and construction of the Chenille Kraft paint cups. The snap on lids didn't all fit right and the caps didn't make an airtight seal which lead to the paint drying out. They are cheap, but you will only want to use them if you are going to clean them out after each use. The Melissa and Doug paint cups have a solid design and construction. This means that I can store paint in the cups until it is used up. You don't have to worry about the lids popping off when they are dropped or squeezed. Great product. See my video for a hands on comparison. With these paint cups I use Crayola Artista II Washable Tempera Paint and the Chenille Kraft Preschool Paint Brush Assortment (I have reviewed those products too). They are a great combination. I buy the paint in the 16oz bottles here on Amazon; you get a lot of paint for the money. My kids love the assortment of 24 brushes from Chenille Kraft and you can have a big and a small brush for each color of paint so you don't have to worry about washing them out until the end. It is hours of fun! If you found this review helpful, let me know with your vote below.

I bought these for my little cousin's birthday along with 16-Oz. Color Splash! Washable Finger Paint Assortment (Pack of 6).
All in all, I was fairly pleased with them. They held much more paint then I thought they would, yet they were a small enough size for a two year old to handle them with ease. We used them with Beginner Paint Brush Set (3) and although the brushes were heavy, the cups did not topple with their weight even when empty. It did frustrate him that the holes were small (they're a bit smaller than they appear in the picture), but it wasn't anything he couldn't quickly adapt to. It's just a warning if you're using somewhat larger brushes, that anything bigger than these ones won't fit with the top on. As for the no-spill, I was pretty pleased with that. It was easy for the little guy to open and close the cap at will, but he was still unable to pull off the tops themselves - and I kind of assumed he was going to be able to, to be frank. When he knocked them over, they could lay and roll on their sides without spilling a drop of paint. However, when he turned them over and banged them against the table - globs of paint did come out. So I would assume that if this was dropped, it would spill out then. Still, spill-proof doesn't equal mess-free. I would buy this again in a heartbeat.

If you are using washable paints, I prefer to allow my kids to use the paint from the original container and instead, I add tap water to the fill line and the kids use these jars to place their paintbrushes in while not in use or to clean their brushes before switching colors. It works great! It encourages my 4 year old to keep his station clean and he washes all brushes when finished painting without being told and then he'll wash out the spill proof jar. I almost didn't buy these, but I am so glad I did. It's worth it!
