5.0 out of 5 stars Great intro for young punk enthusiasts March 3, 2003
Format:Audio CD
So you want to know what punk is all about? Or maybe you've sampled a few punk posers (I won't name names, you _know_ who they are) and you really want to give your ears some sort of aural ectasy - this cd, my punkster friend, is for you.
First you have David Barbe, ues, _the_ David Barbe of Sugar. He is cofounder of this high octane group as well as the songwriter, singer and bassist for the group. That's _not_ enough? Try listening to "Eula Geary Is Dead" and tell me that's not enough!
You also have Andrew Donaldson on guitar and Harry Joiner and Joel Suttles on drums. That this group isn't more widely appreciated is one of the great mysteries of life to me. If you're in to punk, you owe it to yourself to listen to this cd. You will find out what punk really means and how it sounds when it's played by musicians who know what they are doing and not just playing punk for the publicity. This cd wraps up Mercyland's music neatly in a well produced ear enjoyment of music.
Buy it and listen to it faithfully!

5.0 out of 5 stars Track this one down! April 2, 2003
Format:Audio CD
I was fortunate enough to stumble on this one in the cutout bin at Best Buy. I'm glad I did. This CD represents the entire released discography of Mercyland, a post-punk trio out of Athens, GA with David Barbe playing bass and sharing vocals.
I wouldn't say it is great songwriting necessarily, but they play with a lot of energy. This is one that if you like it, you'll listen to it straight through because the songs are all good. There is enough variety that they don't sound the same.
In addition, the liner notes are pretty extensive and paint an interesting picture of the music scene in Athens at the time, one I wish I was a part of.
If you like upbeat punk music that doesn't take itself too seriously, track this one down. It is remarkably good and surprisingly underappreciated.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Classic January 30, 2011
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
David Barbe at his early best, just prior to moving on to Sugar and back to solo work in Athens, GA. This cd is awesome -- go get a copy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast, dirty rock played tight November 30, 2011
By Madrok
Format:Audio CD
David Barbe, Andrew Donaldson, Joel Suttles and more. A zany punk-rock sound that's very technically polished. The singing is fairly raucous, as are the power chords. Some of the songs are very catchy with nice vocal harmonies and clever changes. Good music to blow off the ceiling at a party. Not many headbanging skinheads or your hipster-intellectual DB friends will know this one, but they will like it...and I mean that as high praise!
