Just what I needed!,
By
This review is from: Spilled Milk: Breastfeeding Adventures and Advice from Less-Than Perfect Moms (Paperback)
As a new mother, I purchased this book because one of the advertisements stated 'it is for those of us who think we are doing it (breastfeeding) wrong, which is all of us.' After I received the book, I couldn't put it down and once finished, I started it over again and again. Yes, I am reading it for the third time now. It is extremely motivating and forgiving. You usually see one or the other, motivating or forgiving, but in this case you got both perspectives. The book is definitely pro-breastfeeding, but it also provides testimonials of women who for one reason or another were unable to breastfeed and it shows that is ok too. I was touched by the "weaning" chapter with all the love and sweetness only us mothers will understand. I already bought two more copies and sent them to new mothers. The book really made me feel lucky and special to breastfeed my baby.

I just finished Spilled milk. I wish it were by my side three years ago when my breastfeeding adventures began. I'm going to give it to a friend who is pregnant with her first child.
The author gives an honest look at breastfeeding, from sore nipples to mother's guilt to embarrassing public nursing tales to what happens to your breasts when it is all done. It is a compilation of breastfeeding from many women's perspectives. Women with many different perspectives. I highly recommend it to anyone who is thinking of breastfeeding or is in the throws of breastfeeding and needs to understand it isn't always a bowl of cherries. In the end, the book applauds any attempts you make to breastfeed and refrains from making you feel guilty about any decisions you may make to quit.

Great book for first-time breastfeeding moms!,

While my baby isn't due for another 3 months yet, I plan to breastfeed and am looking for all the helpful advice I can get. This book provides the most common-sense and enjoyable reading I've found on the complicated subject of breastfeeding. It is very funny and "down to earth." As someone who is trying my best to prepare myself for motherhood and is also an admitted perfectionist about many things, I needed a book like this to help me keep everything in perspective. Steiner is very reassuring and encouraging and offers a lot more helpful, practical advice than many of the other breastfeeding books out there. Plus she provides a great bibliography at the end for further reading! I know I will be rereading this book when my baby is born and I would highly recommend it to other new mothers.

Much-needed, well done, and a wonderful read,
This review is from: Spilled Milk: Breastfeeding Adventures and Advice from Less-Than Perfect Moms (Paperback)
Why aren't there more books on breastfeeding? Spilled Milk fills a baffling literary gap. Steiner writes beautifully and inclusively about a complicated, highly personal subject. Mothering (parenting) infants and small children can be isolating and anxiety provoking and this book reduces those problems. I have given it as a gift to 2 new moms.

Hilarious insight into breastfeeding,
By MorganMom "MM" (Memphis, TN) - See all my reviews

I loved this book- I read parts of it before I had my baby and laughed out loud! After I gave birth, the stories (especially the lighthearted ones), reminded me why I was doing such a bizarre and often unpleasant act for my son. I have loaned this book to several new moms, and I would buy it in a heartbeat as a new parent gift! The authors/editors have a way with words and stories that melt your heart and tickle the funny bone! There is also good advice/stories from moms who struggled with breastfeeding for various personal and medical reasons, and this could be invaluable to other women who share this experience but do not discuss it openly.

I totally reccomend this book to anyone wanting to read about breast feeding and be amused doing so. She has a way of making you the reader understand that it's ok not to be perfect at it and that everyone can learn how to be a successful breast feeder.

I thought this book was wonderfully written. It is the perfect book to explain how to breastfeed with lots of great advice. I live in Tokyo, Japan as an expatriot. This book helps to illustrate the complexity of feeding your child in a society (Japan) where showing your breasts in public is not accepted at all.

Breastfeeding isn't exactly easy if you've never done it before,

Breastfeeding moms need all the help and encouragement they can get. My breastfeeding adventures would never have been successful if my husband wasn't 100% behind my choice to do so. So as some of the reading may come off as "fluff", keep in mind that the book is just for your support and amusement. Plus moms want advice from other moms like them. This is a good book of encouragement and support for your breastfeeding days ahead. Good luck.

I absolutely loved this book and re-read sections over and over again. I first read it when I was about 3 weeks post partum and contemplating quitting breastfeeding. I had just read "unbuttoned" and was feeling like I could tough it out but still felt like it was all a competition. I was scared to quit because people would judge me and I wouldn't be the "best" mom. I love how this author keeps re-stating that it is NOT a competition. If you are a mother who is trying to breastfeed but feel like people are being more forceful about it than supportive of how you feel then this book is for you. I soon realized that it is not a competition and I don't care what anyone thinks. I realized that I wasn't really doing this to be the "best mother on the block." I was truly doing it for my baby. It also helps me not to judge other mothers who have gone to formula. Why do people care so much that they have to make them feel bad. Who cares!

Spilled Milk: Breastfeeding Adventures and Advice,

Although it's been many years since my children have been babies, I love this book and have given it as a baby gift more than a few times. For the young mother who has decided to breast feed her baby, "Spilled Milk..." does not intimidate the reader with examples of perfection. Instead the author approaches the subject with humor and insights into this consummately human experience through interviews with real women about their experiences with breast feeding.
