I read this book in one sitting. It was masterfully done, and I was moved to tears on many occasions. As Leo Tolstoy famously observed at the outset of Anna Karenina: "All happy families are happy alike, all unhappy families are unhappy in their own way." This was true of the author's family as well, but Spilled Milk illustrates for those of us who despair at times that unhappy beginnings can yet produce some good. Holly Goldstein's true account of the abuse her tyrannical father rained upon his three daughters is harrowing at times, but never wallows in self-pity. Rather, we see how, step-by-step, she rebuilt her shattered ego, raised a family, and became a talented artist and author whose prose is both lyrical and compelling. The apologies to family, friends and even her childhood cat at the end were heartbreaking, although I feel sure any "harm" the author believes she has caused those close to her has been outweighed by the joy she has brought into their lives, and all the good work she now does as an advocate for the defenseless.

Holly Goldstein writes about life with an abusive alcoholic father and an equally abusive and vicious mother in such a way that the reader is left with optimism and hope - for both the writer and the reader. Ms Goldstein is able to talk frankly about the ugliness of her childhood and how the black tendrils of child abuse claw their way through time into adulthood, constantly trying to pull one back into the misery of the past. To escape is difficult and to forget is challenging - but not impossible.

SPILLED MILK is a valuable cathartic novel written by a survivor in the truest sense of the word. No one will ever understand the anguish of child abuse better than an abused child and no one understands what is necessary for survival better than a survivor.

This book began its life as a cathartic journal and evolved into a self-help book for others looking for help coping with his or her own abusive nightmares. Holly provides suggestions for survivors to find forgiveness, to move past the anger and hatred and to find happiness in life - to make it worth living.

Recommended reading for survivors of all forms of child abuse.
