4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good
This machine is actually pretty nice. It makes an Icee just like from the store. You have to turn it longer than the instructions say, but you do wind up with a regular Icee, just small amounts, but it will fill up the two small cups provided. It also tastes great. Also, make sure you don't overfill the metal canister with too much ice and salt or it will come out the top...

Overall I would say the slushee maker makes good slushees. After using it a few times, I can see that what will keep me from using this every day is the small amount of slushee you get for the amount of work it takes. This machine is actually pretty nice. It makes an Icee just like from the store. You have to turn it longer than the instructions say, but you do wind up with a regular Icee, just small amounts, but it will fill up the two small cups provided. It also tastes great. Also, make sure you don't overfill the metal canister with too much ice and salt or it will come out the top into your Icee and make it salty. Also remember the ice and salt goes into the metal canister (not the drink) and the drink into the mixing part. Another thing I like about this toy is that water doesn't leak everywhere when you use it. It's not very messy at all.

The best thing about this toy is you don't have to buy refills. You just use soda, or juice. Clean up is pretty easy, the kids can do it.

We bought both this toy and the McDonalds McFlurry machine, please read my review of it. If you are trying to decide between the two, you definately want the Icee Maker.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow -- A Low Cost Toy That Works!, November 15, 2003
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Slushee Maker (Toy)
My 10 year old daughter really enjoys this. Some notes:
1. This is not a toy for unsupervised use. The ice/salt combination gets VERY cold; if it comes into contact with skin it will freeze to the skin (kind of like licking the flag pole, for those of you that remember the movie).
2. It takes some time to figure out how to put it together the first time, but is a breeze after that.
3. Quantities are small, but enough to satisfy a kid.
4. Hmmm....this could be used to make margaritas, too. :-) But, see note 3.
5. Cranking typically takes a few minutes longer than the instructions say -- but that's part of the group fun involved.
6. I gave this a "3" in educational, because this gives kids a little science lesson on how salted ice can be used to freeze water.

Mostly, I'm just amazed that a $... product actually does what it says it will do. If you think you'd enjoy using this with your kids, it's a great buy. If you aren't interested in using this with them, then avoid it.

4.0 out of 5 stars I Love Slushees!!, February 19, 2003

This beautifully patriotic slushee maker is really terrific. I originally purchased it as a gift in an attempt to bribe one of my girlfriend's overly suspicious kids, but once I tested it out for myself (I made several delicious adult slooshees) I decided to keep it and buy another one for the kid.

The Slushee Maker by Spin Master Toys is easy to operate (even after seven slooshies), creates perfectly slushed ice, and (best of all) is a breeze to clean. There are no special added ingredients necessary--simply add the ice, some salt, sugar (if desired), and your beverage of choice. The cranking mechanism requires some muscle power, but even a 10-year old kid (or a sloshed adult) can crank it with minimal effort. What a find!!! A hearty cheers to Spin Master Toys for this contraption.

Overall I would say the slushee maker makes good slushees. After using it a few times, I can see that what will keep me from using this every day is the small amount of slushee you get for the amount of work it takes. While the instructions say you have to crank the handle continuously for 5 minutes, it has taken me 10 minutes each time to get a good consistency. And after the 5 minute mark, I usually take part of the unit apart to add more ice to make it work more efficiently. Like I said, the final product is everything you would hope for, but you only get about 6 to 8 ounces of slushee out of it! For my son, that's not even a full serving when he's used to getting 24 to 32 ounces at the convenience store. I figure if I have 40 minutes to spare and as long as I can keep the stuff cold, I can combine four batches to come up with about 25-30 ounces of slushee. Now I only cringe each time he wants me to make a slushee for him thinking about the effort that it will take. It cranks easy, but doing anything for ten minutes will fatigue muscles that you don't use every day.

3.0 out of 5 stars It works as advertised, August 29, 2004

My son received this for his birthday and we were about to return it except for the fact that we didn't have a receipt. We already has a shaved ice snow cone maker and didn't need another one like it.

It was 95 degrees today so we opened it up and decided to make root beer ICEE's for my 7 year old son and his friend. We followed the instructions exactly (chill aluminum container, fill it with crushed ice, add salt, add a little water), we then added one bottle of root beer which conveniently emptied exactly where the ICEE machines reservoir stopped. After 3-4 minutes of cranking the root beer turned into a thick ICEE like drink as advertised. My wife and I were impressed that it actually worked as advertised.

This machine works in a manner very similar to an ice cream maker. The ice and salt are used to super cool the drink solution of your choice. It's only a toy so don't count on it cranking out 32 ounce ICEE's on command, but for those hot days when your kids are bored it is something fun (and mildly educational) to do.

5.0 out of 5 stars No more trips to 7-11 for my kids!, May 1, 2004

I was amazed at how well this toy works! I was very skeptical, but the slushees are delicious and just like the ones from our local 7-11 convenience store. I don't understand all the bad reviews, unless some batches of the toys are defective. It was simple to assemble and washed up easily. The only negative comment would be that the auger does get stained from the drinks, but it works like a dream. For our family the key is to place the drink (soda pop, juice, kool-aid) in the freezer for 30 minutes before placing the liquid in the slushee maker (which was a suggestion in the instructions). We also used regular, large sized ice cubes (not crushed ice) and within 4 minutes the slushee was ready. The crank turns easily and the end product is so smooth and delicious. It would be nice if it made larger portions, but the upside is it gives my kids something to keep them busy on a hot summer day.

I am mainly writing to let other reviewers know that directions can be found on spinmaster.com. This machine is great fun to my child, but kind of a hassle for me!

The best thing my daughter got from her purchase of the Slushee maker was an education on how easy it is to kiss 20 bucks goodbye! It might work if you crank it for about 30 minutes but we gave up after 15 and she drank a runny, goopy, sugary drink. We experimented with different drinks, more and less salt, and everything else we could think of. Still does not work. I'd rather pay the buck at Kmart's little cafeteria. If you want to make cold treats at home, I'd recommend the Mr. Snowman. It's not the same - more of a snow cone, but it's easier, MUCH faster and cheaper(around $8).
