This is definetly not what I expected from Mixmaster Mike. This
album is a big contrast compared to "Anti Theft Device". I'm not saying I don't like Mike, but I will say that this is more like a Funk Master Comp. I believe that Mike is capable of doing a lot better than this.Could it be the label he is on?

What can be said of Mixmaster Mike? To those who don't already know, yes, he is a member of the Beastie Boys. He was also part of a group of revolving turntable technicians known as the Invisbl Skratch Piklz, which included the DJ's(among others)Qbert, Flare, Shortkut, and Disk. So far in his solo career he has put out about four albums. All consisting of his excellent boom-bap production skillz, and constant track title mispelling. He does also a much needed dose of a special flavor to his mixes that people rarely use. Say it with me now, Heart. He puts his heart into his songs. If you listen closely, with the right kind of ears, you can hear it.
Anyway, onto the album. As stated before, he has about 4 other solo albums. All perfect in there own right. This album strays away from his usual albums and venture off into the mixtape foray. Back in the days, this was a way for a DJ to show his true unique skills and techniques. Well, Mike sets it off with an intro used from his "Anti-Theft Device" album. From then on superfast skratching and hilarity ensues. I found myself rewinding constantly, in a kind of "WTF" kind of mode. The pace of a mixtape is always important. Mike's is no different, it's (as expected) pretty fast paced, and flows quickly. The most important thing about a mixtape, is that it is like a journey into the Dj's head. What are his favorite songs? What does he like to cutup most? This album sounds to me like mike just chilling in his room, making a mixtape not for any commercial reasons (most of the acts are underground, very underground) but he just wants to have fun. ADD A LITTLE BIT OF HEART, AND YOU HAVE ONE OF THE BEST MIXTAPES FROM ONE OF THE BEST.

p.s. Is there an unedited version available? That would be my only gripe...

5.0 out of 5 stars Mixtape by the Mixmaster, January 22, 2004
This review is from: Spin Psycle (Audio CD)
Incredibly good album consisting of a combo of straight-up turntable instrumentals and remixes of great hip-hop tracks. The album's fast-paced and will keep your head nodding. Mixmaster Mike's turntable skills and his talent for remixing hip-hop tracks are on full display. The album starts off with 3 great instrumentals including a track called "Cosmic Assassins" with Q-Bert. Then the mixes commence starting with Gangstarr, KRS-One, and so on. In my opinion, there's not a single weak track on this album which terminates in a new version of "Three MCs and One DJ" which is different from the original on the Beastie Boys' "Hello Nasty" CD.

Great album all around. I highly recommend it.

run d.m.c. said "a d.j. could be a band." MixMasterMike is an orcahestra. This c.d. is phenomenal if d.j. Q-Bert is considered the "greatest" wizard of wax, than M-M-M is his teacher and insperation.
On this c.d. you will find great songs like K.R.S-one's get yourself up. Deltron 3030's poritiye contact Mario C. remix, Three M.C.'s and one D.J. LIVE. if your into or interested in H.I.P.H.O.P. buy this an "understand" hiphop.
If you like this pick up MixMasterMike's Anti-theft device.

I've been a Beastie Boys fan for years now and Mix Master Mike is involved in the love I have for them. They appreciate and represent the purest form of music today, HIP-HOP. Anit-Theft Device was one of the sickest CD's I'd ever heard and Spin Psycle is equal if not more progressive and better. Mix Masta's independent efforts alone will make him a turntable legend.
Peace Out!
Hag and Deve

5.0 out of 5 stars Why this album is so good, March 14, 2003
This review is from: Spin Psycle (Audio CD)
alright, the people who gave this album anything less than 4 stars have no idea what they are talking about and have never touch a set of turn tables. mix master mike is a genious for putting this album together because it combines underground hiphop elements with some jiggy-type rap. the scratching technique is brilliant. some times he'll blow your mind with ultra fast scratching and at other times he throws in abstract out of time beat placement causing a confusing effect of beats and snares hitting the wall all at the same time, but i asure you everything he does on this album is intentional, not sloppy like another reviewer mention. Buy this album, if you're a REAL hiphop fan, i guaranty you'll like it. just look at the track list for god sakes!

definitely not feeling this album. This is a mediocre attempt at a mixed tape. this is not what i expected from the grandmaster mmm. i don't if he did this live or what, but sounds sloppy too. his first album was much better. i think moonshine put pressure on him to put out an album, and this is what we got. it's not that bad of an album, just subpar from a grandmaster.
