Book Description

October 29, 2002
We're all familiar with the warning, "Don't believe everything you see or hear." Bill Press, the popular co-host of CNN's "Crossfire," will have you wondering whether you should believe anything at all.

"Spin" -- intentional manipulation of the truth -- is everywhere. It's in the White House, in the courtrooms, in headlines and advertising slogans. Even couples on dates -- not to mention book jackets -- are guilty of spin. Now, analyst Bill Press freeze-frames the culture of spin to investigate what exactly spin is, who does it and why, and its impact on American society as a whole.

Depending upon who is doing it, spinning can mean anything from portraying a difficult situation in the best possible light to completely disregarding the facts with the intent of averting embarrassment or scandal. Using examples drawn from recent history -- the Clinton presidency, the Florida recount, and the Bush White House -- Press first probes spin's favorite haunt: politics. In addition to surveying the incarnations of spin in the fields of journalism, law, and advertising, Press also chews on the spin of sex and "dating," a word that has become the very embodiment of spin. Perhaps surprisingly, however, Press argues that spin isn't all bad, and that without it the harsh truths of our times might be too tough to swallow.

With the same keen sense of humor that helped make CNN's "Crossfire" television's premier debate show and the limited run of "The Spin Room" so popular, Press turns the tables on the prime purveyors of spin -- called "spin doctors" -- noting some of their biggest guffaws and blunders. As Press notes, it has become abundantly clear that the twenty-first century, beginning as it has with a president who was "spun into office," will be a fertile stomping ground for spin.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Press, a Crossfire cohost, provides an amusing look at "spin," the basic commodity of professions from politics to journalism to marketing. After offering a loose definition of spin that distinguishes it from outright lying, Press expounds on the infinite varieties. There is the happy-face spin, which makes bad news sound good; the Boy Scout spin, which is pious denial; the twilight-zone spin, which projects the exact opposite of the truth; and, of course, the time-honored statistics spin, which twists and often fabricates numbers. Press cites plenty of examples, including the it-depends-on-the-definition spin offered by President Clinton's evasive definition of sex when the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke. Historical examples include the claim that the Civil War was fought to end slavery and talk of "collateral damage" during the Vietnam War to avoid talk of casualties. Press includes nominations to the spin hall of fame offered by well-known writers and political figures. All readers will enjoy this look at a widespread practice. Vanessa Bush

James Carville from the left Press impresses. He takes the dizziness out of a spin. This book proves that you can't spin a spinner. -- Review --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

3.0 out of 5 stars I expected more, March 4, 2002

This book is not worth reading if you're looking for a sophisticated political discussion. Press applies this broad notion of "spin" to a wide range of topics, including advertising, dating, sex, as well as politics. Although his description of spin in nonpolitical contexts is interesting, it is not novel and I would have preferred it if he'd stuck to politics.

I'll give Press some credit for generally writing from a nonpartisan perspective. Although he's a liberal, Press describes the spin of both Republicans and Democrats. Often, however, the discussion is more humorous than intellectually stimulating...

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, hilarious, solid and actually bipartisan!!!!, February 28, 2002
By
OK, so Bill Press lost his dayjob, as co-host of CNN's Crossfire (he is now a "contributor"). But not only will we likely still see him on the tube...but he has a great back-up day-job: as an author.

Spin This! has to be one of the funniest, yet most painstakingly researched, books I have ever read. From "spins" dating back to Bibical times, to politics, to show biz, to male-female relationships, SPIN THIS laughingly explores (and exposes) it ALL. Whether you're a Democrat, Republican, Liberal, Conservative...or WHATEVER...you're going to find stuff that you'll LOVE in this book. Even if you don't know anything about politics it is not ALL about political spin.

And there's this bonus: Bill Press is actually a screamingly funny and highly talented writer. And that ain't spin.

If you think you're going to get a diatribe from him, think again. You really don't. And if you love Bill Press' views and expect him to let Democrats or liberals off the hook, think again, too. In reality, he sits back and explores SPECIFIC "spins" in all walks of life -- and comments on them with laugh-out-loud wisecracks.

Still not convinced that this one-of-a-kind book (it is funny but it also can serve as a GREAT reference book due to the truly solid research reflected on each page)can appeal to EVERYONE?

Then consider his Spin Hall of Fame where he lets famous commentators of all persuasions profile THEIR idea of the most outrageous spins. To name a few: Robert Novak (on Al Gore), Kate O'Beirne (Hillary Clinton), Cal Thomas (Satan), Al Franken (Karl Rove), and one of his CNN replacements, Paul Begala on GWB. Clearly his colleagues on the right and left had a lot of fun with this project, too. Painstakingly researched -- and painstakingly hilarious. Gift it to those who agree and disagree with you!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as I hoped, November 19, 2001
By A Customer
I've been following Mr. Press work ever since he joined Crossfire and I think he's one of the most poised, erudite and objective journalists on the left (with the exception of Christopher Hitchens). Moreover he is extremely funny. So when I saw that he wrote a book about spin I immediatly ordered it. Spin isn't a big thing (yet) in Europe, at least not on the continent, and since I work in politics I hoped to pick up one or two usefull suggestions on the subject. Alas that was not the case. Although undoubtedly funny and occasionally insightful this book was written mostly to amuse (and it did). Only I expected something else.
