There are several reasons to seek this very early YJ out. Marc Russo's vibrant sax for one (nothing at all against Mintzer, but if you haven't heard this band with Russo, this may be the place to start). This CD opens with an ice cool vibe (Geraldine, which they still perform) and picks up speed from there. Several of the tunes (The Spin, Dark Horses, Blues for Nikki) are trademark tight, dynamic, with some wicked Haslip lines. In many ways it it typical of the best of what this band has done for 30 years. I'm not sure they have ever done better (though they certainly have maintained this high standard) It's too bad there are no sound samples available here, but if you like the Yellowjackets, even a little, don't hesitate on this one.
But there is something else that makes this recording stand out: this session was recorded in Rainbow Studios and engineered by Jan Erik Kongshaug. All the ingredients of an ECM recording minus Manfred Eicher. The quality of the recording here is the best of the period. It's great jazz, great `Jackets with top notch production.
