Book Description

December 31, 1998 Workshop Practice
With the model and amateur engineer in mind, this is a guide to making light milling or grinding spindles with a small lathe. Spindles come in many shapes and sizes, depending on their use and included here are descriptions of the design, construction and use of a variety of types (from 19.05 - 57.15mm/0.75 - 2.25 inch) for grinding, milling and drilling. The emphasis is on spindles which are easy to make and have as few parts as possible - all but one use sealed ball bearings. The author is a designer, machinist and woodworker whose interest in clock making led him to design and build the spindles in the book. Also included is a light gear cutting frame for clock makers.

The is an excellent presentation of the machining of not only spindles but the housings, bearing selection, machining internal morse tapers, nuts, pulleys, spindle mounts, and bearing retainers. The book is well written, well illustrated, and easily understood. Numerous spindle examples and dimensions are provided along with step by step procedures and tips. I also found bonus material on thread cutting, making machinist buttons, lathe alignment and the setup for making spindles and collets to hold various tooling very valuable. If you have a spindle to design, want to build a tool post grinder, or a special application or just want to learn more about using a lathe, this is the book to get. It is well worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars All machines have spindles! (most anyway), July 28, 2011

This review is from: Spindles (Workshop Practice) (Paperback)
I bought this book because it was required to build the spindle for a tool and cutter grinder, the plans for which appeared in a magazine. I have bought quite a few of the "Workshop Practice" series, and was reasonably confident that this title would be as useful as the others, despite the (to me) arcane title.

I was not disappointed. I went on to build one of the spindles in the book, and used it in a very successful tool and cutter grinder.

I agree with all of the first reviewer's comments, and would add that the plans and instructions are very clear and do-able.

For an amateur metalworker who likes to build his/her own tools, the book is invaluable. It turns out that a successful spindle involves quite a bit of knowledge, and a sequence of machining, which is very nicely described in this book.
