Monster Magnet - The Duke

Described as a “mind-expansion team” by The New York Times, New Jersey’s MONSTER MAGNET is hands down one of the most explosive and exciting U.S. rock bands of the last two decades. The band will release its long-awaited new album “Mastermind“ this October.

"It's a big, beefy ball of demented anthems and power rock," says MAGNET frontman Dave ... Read more in Amazon's Monster Magnet Store

5.0 out of 5 stars You don't yank on the spine of God!!!! June 16, 2007
Format:Audio CD
There's nothing I could say or do to give this album justice on how great it really is. No words are capable of describing the haunting, explosive, aggressive, yet cool and calm vibes this album takes you through. I've owned a lot of great albums from a lot of great bands, and I know that it's a little childish, choosing favorites and all, but this album ranks as my favorite album of all time, hands down. Are you interested in music with not only talented musicians, but talented song writers? Well, rest assured that you will have both great songs with some incredible playing. The lyrics are out of this world, perhaps on "mountains of Mars?" This was back when Monster Magnet, who will always reign as my favorite band, was expressing their more psychodelic roots. Basically this is a little different sounding than the band we all know and love today. There are a lot of swirling vocal effects as well as strange synths and eerie guitar leads. Dave's vocals are absolutely stunning. He didn't learn to sing, he was born to sing. There's a lot of built-up and tension that is released as the songs progress. The album's closer "Ozium" takes you to a whole new world, nay, universe! Basically, as a reviewer and music fan, it is my duty to spread the word of this album. Infinite stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars the best monster magnet record October 10, 2006
Format:Audio CD
I know many who like monster magnet tendd to favor their later work, for its more metallic agressive nature. This album was mmy introduction bacck at college in 1991, and I never got sick of it. It has some really cool songs, that are very I think influential. Sin's a good man's brother, ozium, zodiac lung, and nod scene. I happened to interview Dave once when I was working for my college radio station. He was very cool, in to music that I knew a little aabout then, alot more now. Stuff like Greasy truckers party hawkwind. I think those of you who don't know hawkwind, should check out: hall of thee mountain grill, do re mi, and out and intake. I only hope DDave can go back to more of a Psychedelic side, the recent balls to the wall rocck, is cool, but I think his music needs to strike a better balance like what you have on this record. Thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Monster Magnet - Spine Of God January 31, 2012
Format:Audio CD
New Jersey's Monster Magnet are one of the pioneering names in Stoner Rock and their 1991(Germany)/1992(USA) debut studio album Spine Of God was one of the first ever commercially available albums in the genre.

Beyond simply being released early, Spine Of God is a hugely influential and well-respected album that no Monster Magnet fan should be without. Although the production isn't as strong as their following albums, stylistically the album feels almost like a lost album from the 70s, which is supported by the raw production in addition to the bands mixing of Classic, Space, Prog and Psychedelic rock stylings.

The Psychedelic influences in particular are really strong, more so than on any of the band's subsequent releases. The music is hypnotic, layered and is awash with numerous effects and consequently the sound is as hazy and drugged-out as Dave himself purports to be in the lyrics.

Dave Wyndorf's strong voice and impressive vocal range is what most Monster Magnet fans find appealing and the strange and amusing lyrics are interesting as always, even at this early stage in their career.

Highlights include The Title Track, which comes across in the same dark foreboding psychedelic mood as Pink Floyd's `Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun' only filtered through a 1990s perspective as well as `Sin's A Good Man's Brother,' which is a Grand Funk Railroad cover song and the harder rocking `Snake Dance,' which sounds somewhat of a taster of things to come for the band's next album SuperJudge.

Overall, Spine Of God is a genre classic and if you like Monster Magnet or indeed any other bands on the Stoner/Desert Rock end of the spectrum such as Sleep, Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Clutch, Sheavy, Dozer or Orange Goblin, then it really is something that you ought to consider trying out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice work March 22, 2014

They did a good job with this reissue and I love the old MM sound and feel. Even in its rawest form, MM really rocks. "Sin's a Good Man's Brother" is outstanding and the music/riff was borrowed if not literally stolen by Velvet Revolver.

I have been a Monster Magnet fan since the moment I heard Negasonic Teenage Warhead back in my college days. I have owned and loved every release since then, but for some reason never got around to buying Pre-"Dopes" material....until now. Spine of God is everything I would have expected from the torch bearers of stoner metal...sonic, raw, trippy, atmospheric, heavy, chaotic. Monster Magnet is one of the rare bands that have melded these elements together to form a sound all their own, and Spine of God is the perfect genesis of this sound. Even the less than impressive production of this album seems to fit and adds to the charm of the material on Spine of God. Heavy fuzzed out guitar, check. trippy, atmospheric melodies...check. Dave Wyndorf's tongue in cheek lyrical brilliance...check! Turn out the lights and crank to 11...Spine of God always satisfies!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Monster Hit November 26, 2012

One of the best albums from this great Band...This is a band that is musically soo diverse and not caught up in a Seattle sound.
